So i have a chance to buy a 6800 ultra with a zalman vf700cu for $325.

Since i have a agp mobo, this would be my last upgrade.

Good deal? bad? Opinions?

Maybe on ebay. If you try to sell on anandtech FS/FT forums, it will be hard to sell for 110 bucks.
 
Well being faster in opengl is something id prefer, quake 4 and prey are both opengl and look like awesome games. But 325 is pretty steep for my budget, then again its probably the best gcard ill be able to get for my pc w/o swapping out the mobo. So conflicted...

Im sure i could find a used 6800gt or x800xt for around $250, and they probably could be OC to 6800ultra performance. Then again, thats just a "probably" and this is a sure thing.

Another thing to keep in mind is resale value when i do finally overhaul my entire PC. 'End of the line' products seem to retain more of their value over time than lesser products.

I cry out to you anandtechians, do i take the plunge? I must make up my mind soon.
 
Get a x800Pro refurb whenever ATI has it, it might not be a 6800GT, but it can hold its own, and its cheap.

Then use the money saved to put towards a new mobo/cpu/vid card whenever UT2k7 comes out =P.

well considering a 6800gt retails new for $300 and goes used for around $250-$260 on ebay, im only really dropping 40 more on this card once you substract away the cost of the custom HS. Im leaning towards buying it.
 
Most 6800gt OC to ultra speeds anyways, and $325 is WAAAAY too much to spend on an ultra. The ultras will not go down in price, even though there are now much better cards available for that same money. Just look at the 9800xt still selling for $200+, and it's almost 3 years old. No one in their right mind would buy the xt for that money, and no one should buy an ultra for >$300. Just get a used 6800gt or a x800-series card for ~$200-250. Think of it this way - if you run a game like FEAR where the 6800gt is suffering, the ultra is gonna suffer almost as bad, so it's not worth the extra money.

Agreed, if you're going to spend $300+ on a video card, it would be more sensible to swap out your mobo for a PCI-e board and pick up a 7800 GT instead. Better performance for roughly the same price.
 
Not hardly, because a 7800gt retails for $377 and swaping to a mobo that has pcie would cost me another 100. Thats another 150. Id much rather max out my current mobo and upgrade to a M2 socket in a year or so.

Keep in mind the price includes a zalman 700cu, so the card itself is actually only costing me 295-300.

Actually you can get a 7800 GT as low as $289.99 after rebate, and even Newegg has 7800 GT's as low as $335. So for the same price as what you're paying for a 6800 Ultra + cooler, you can get a 7800 GT, which is why I think it's expensive for what you're getting.
