Completing the last of my upgrades to carry me through the next year.

Went to 2GB (G.Skill ZX) and will be picking up a GPU (8800GT/3870) soon.

What's the CPU to go with assuming one is going to overclock?

I see most going 4800+ or Opteron 180 as the Opteron 185 doesn't stretch much.

I am open to used or new options.

I currently have a San Diego 4000+ running at 2.83GHz.

Thanks

If I were you, I'd get either a 165 or a 170. They overclock as high as any of the others, although quite a few people seem to be limited by their motherboards, with the 165's. My LCB9E Opteron 170 did 2.8 Ghz pretty easily.

You could get a e2180 and cheap mobo for $150 and you'd probably be able to go a lot further with that 8800GT towards the end of your rig's life when more games like Crysis that take a lot of CPU power (physics) are coming out.

abit, msi, and gigabyte offer superb sub-$100 boards that will suit any 21x0. I'd suggest a 2160 for a mixture of multiplier and price- if it is a concern

I recently got a 4200+ Toledo for 50? and it went to 2.8 GHz with stock voltage. But if you want to pay more you might want to get a cheap MoBo + C2D.

Nothing to do with price really...just that the cost won't be worth it IMHO for my rig. Also the time factor is DEFINITELY not worth it right now.

I am looking for a dual core 939 that can hit 2.8+ like my 4000+ single core and that should be had for under $100.

End of next year I will probably upgrade the motherboard/cpu and go to DDR3
