Last Samurai.... GREAT MOVIE!!!!

Let me tell ya, this is by far the best movie I've watched in recent years. Possibly one of the best I have ever seen. WAAAAAAY better then ROTK. The fighting scenes are amazing. The story is even better. And the acting... wow. Its great! No complaints about this movie. Anyone else love it as much as me?!?

Good movie except for the king.........his scene at the end almost spoiled the movie for me......

A complaint I've heard is that the king was incorrectly portrayed as a pansy. Supposedly, he wasn't like that in real life. I'm unfamiliar with their history, so I can't really confirm or deny it.

While I did not love it as much as you did...I did thoroughly enjoy it. It wasn't a perfect movie by any means, but it was a very well done epic. I have always enjoyed Edward Zwick movies and I believe I will continue to do so. I really hope this movie makes enough to keep decent funding for future Zwick movies.

Well the king at the end......the speech was just dragged out I think.....and he spoke english pretty well when it seemed like he didn't know any english at all at the beginning of the movie.....

Other than that......I thought it was one of the best films of this year definitely.......

I also thought the movie was very good. It did a great job developing the actors and even a better job by captivating me in the samurai environment, traditions, and their livelihoods. It was really a good story.

Al though, it was a little over dramatized in some scenes and the head popping , I thought, got a little cheesy. It also reminded me of the movie, "The Patriot" , but with Tom Cruise and Japanese soldiers. In which case, it's not necessarily a bad thing, just a observation.

it's no braveheart, but def better than the patriot and gladiator

the arrow battle scene not as good as in 'hero' w/ jet li

the thing i didn't like about rotk was the talky chickflick like boohoo parting is such sweet sorrow chatty huggy waste of 15min

haha ya that part in ROTK sucked!

The movie was better than I thought. Tom Cruise as a samurai just gave a bad impression before I saw the movie, but as it turns out, "The Last Samurai" meant Ken Wantanabe, the guy who played the rebel leader. But Tom Cruise as an action star was quite good, but it's still going to be hard to get rid of the stereotype of him as being a pansy.

Lol...Japanese person I know says the movie got the history TOTALLY wrong. Why would you trust Hollywood to portray anything accurately?

I would agree that The Last Samurai was more than I expected and would agree that Hollywood stretches history. I checked into the facts and thought some insights would be interesting to those of you that appreciate accuracy.
This period of time is called the Meiji restoration. The emperor came into power at the age of 15. The next year was when the shogun fell, that is, the samurai. The emperor had little power but was the symbol of unity for Japan. This was a time when Japan became a modern industrial state and flexed its military power.
The rebellion shown in this movie is supposedly the Satsuma Rebellion. It was led by Saigo Takamori, played as Katsumoto in the movie. Saigo supported the emperor in 1867 but opposed Westernization of Japan and so he left and spent 4 yrs training a military force at which time in 1877, led the revolt. They were defeated and Saigo committed suicide and became a symbol of devotion to principle.
The Satsuma Army did not wear the armour as depicted in the movie but rather wore their own clothes with a white cloth on the upper arm for identification. The samurai actually used Enfield rifles, firing one round per minute. They used 28 mtn guns, 2 field guns and mortars. The swords used had been seized from some armories and were of inferior quality and some samurai may have carried spears. The Satsuma Army had no cavalry but a few officers were mounted. The numbers of soldiers were 300,000 Imperial and 25,000 samurai. Dead were 15,ooo Imperial and 6000 samurai.
Other tidbits: Custer did get a battlefield promotion to general despite Tom Cruise's comment; a samurai sword would have taken at least a month to make contrare to the movies' few days; the ninja attack was a bit hokey.
All in all I liked the movie and wasn't embarrassed by the romance. I felt the gai-jin's acceptance of Algren to be believable.
I think a lot more things can be compared to other movies such as Dances with Wolves and Kurosawa's films and would like to see comments on the photography.

Yep, I liked everything about the movie, including the final scene. I thought that it was an excellent way to end it, with him getting rid of that weasely guy.

Highly recommended.

I don't think the movie ever made a claim that it's a documentary of Japanese history, so it doesn't matter how they tell the story. It's just a movie!!

I respectfully disagree as how a story can be told. This movie could have had many different director's choices and how he chose to tell the story can be important. I agree that this movie was entertaining but it could have been more fully appreciated, historicity aside, had the director made a different choice as to how he would base the premise of the story. He chose to associate the Indian Wars instead of using the Civil War which slants the story towards a tribal mentality against the white man. Civil War perspective would have pitted samurai against the native people and the Jap gov't against the imperial American gov't. Doing so would bring out the rebellious faction vs. governments. And Algren goes back to his new home happy as punch. Not a bad ending but not much to hang onto either. The Taiwanese film Double Vision is a very good film and I still think about it because of how the director chose to tell the story.
