I moved all my 401k to bonds a long time ago, and I'm not doing that bad compared to some people :p

Moved my money into a bond fund. Made 5 percent or so.
Lost about 15 percent before that though, so this is just damage control.

-42.1% YTD for me. Good thing I took my stuff out of that aggressive fund before all the money was wasted. Also a good thing I stopped my contributions for now to buy more toys or all of that money would have been gone anyway. Stupid economy. I might as well have gone to a casino to blow it - at least I'd get free drinks.

Because I'm so damn old and grizzled, I cant afford to retire in 4 years because of the market downturn.

I'm 18 BTW.

So when are you guys going to get aggressive again? It's going to be very difficult picking up on the floor, so when you do get back in you will be losing a lot of gain (assuming there is a pickup some time in the next 30 years). Is <5% return on a bond fund worth it? Yes, I'm losing a lot now, but I'm picking up some cheap shares. Now if you are close to retirement, your move is wise.

CPA, I'm watching the trends. Frankly I am waiting for something definitive to happen with Iraq. Psychology is very important now, more so than usual IMO. Uncertainty drives the market down. I may lose some gain, but I think I will be starting higher than if I did not take this action.

I contributed $11,000 this year. I lost $9,500 of it.

However, I didn't really lose anything, because I still have all my shares. I'm only 31, so when I retire in 34 years, I'll be sitting pretty.

Maybe.

I need to diversify my 401k even more, I wonder if I can allocate some funds to bonds?
