Last Post (I promise) : HONDA CIVIC EX VS MAZDA PROTEGE5

Ok, after a LOOOOOOOOOOONG time, anyone reading my posts know this. I looked at every car in my price range. I am not planning to race, this car will be for economical use. Here were my choices at first

1. Sentra SE-R - Hella power, best bang for the bucks (spec wise), but the looks just don't appeal

2. Jetta 1.8T - I was willing to pay the extra bucks for the power, but, found Consumer Reports says Jetta is one of the worst cars. Their history is aweful.

3. Toyota Corolla - Reliable as hell since it's Toyota, but the looks just don't click

4. Subaru Impreza - Probably anyone would agree with me to get this, but their MPG is bad and something bugs me about the lights and the size of the car.

So here we are
MAZDA PROTEGE 5 - Looks good, not many people have it, 26 mpg, Mazda isn't as bad reliability as VW. In fact, Consumer Reports gave them a really good rating for reliability. price is good, cargo space is good.

Pic2 - I won't be fixing it up like this one, but this is the only blue pic I can find.

Honda Civic EX - Feels very comfy inside, people have it, but has good resale value. Starting last year, they started making it in a factory in Ohio, reliability may be a little bad, but still seems to be better than Mazda. Consumer Reports says that Mazda PRotege5 will be better than Honda Civic in performance wise (reliability, and everything) for 2002.

Anyways, what do you all think. Anyone go through this when purchasing a car? Anyone own these cars or know anyone with them?

For all of you : I WILL BUY a car before 06/02

between THOSE two, I'd go with the protege, but I like the civic coupe better. There's a riced out Protege near my school and it ain't bad at all.

If you want a good looking car, get the Mazda. If you want an ALL AROUND GREAT CAR, with great reliability, get the honda. I would reccomend getting the civic coupe. I drive the coupe, and it's awesome 🙂

Last post???
I think I've seen you post about 50 threads saying it was the last post...
and what's worse is that you ask the same friggin' question every time!

<< Consumer Reports says that Mazda PRotege5 will be better than Honda Civic in performance wise (reliability, and everything) for 2002. >>

And how exactly does consumer reports know on a car that came out not too long ago?
I wouldn't trust it THAT much.
We have a '99 protege and it's doing just fine.
Civics are known for reliability too.

AFAIK, all the listed cars above have a good reliability record except for the Jetta... don't know much about Subaru's...

btw,

Impreza is 21/27 MPG with 165HP and AWD.
Civic is 32/37 MPG with 127HP.
Protege5 is 25/31 with 130HP.

I'd go for the Impreza for fun, or the Civic for mileage. Go Protege if you want a wagon 🙂

The CIvic, starting last year, changed their model and started building in Ohio. The 2001 Civic's are already having some problems, that's probably why the ratings went down all of a sudden. They still recommend it. Almost all reviews say the Protege5 and Protege sedan are the same thing, Protege5 just has a little backpack to it. Consumer Reports rates them as the same car. Protege5 comes straight from Japan and in Japan, they had it for a while as Familia S-wagon

Did you just say "Hella power"???

how is a jetta not a reliable car, hella ppl own VWs and they all love em, i drive a golf, and i love it, haven't had any problems with it yet.

Go to Barnes and Nobles and pick up their latest Consumer Reports Auto Edition 2002. Look at Jetta's history. Yes, the VW is very popular. But Golf, Jetta, Passat, and ESPECIALLY Beetle, isn't doing too well in history. We don't know if the new model change for 2001 is as bad. But the ones before 93~99ish, isn't doing too well.

Believe it or not, Sentra SE-R - 165hp
Sentra SE-R SpecV - 175hp

Out of the bunch, I'd go with an Impreza TS Wagon.

AWD, the most power out of the bunch, and one of the best reliability records of any car in the market. Also pretty uncommon as well. Gas milage isn't *that* bad either. Something like 22/27. They have lots of low end grunt...for a N/A four banger.

An FYI: They've been making Honda Civics in the US and Canada since the late 80s. Very few have been imported from Japan since 91 or so.

<< find a '99 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX

cant lose with AWD turbo!
>>

He wants reliability

MP3's great looking, but that's not the car I'm looking for. I want to get through as a economical car. Don't want to be raced everytime I stop at a red light.

Yea, Mitsubishi lacks in reliability.

Uhmmm... the Protege has a 2.0 liter 130 hp "beast" of an engine.
I think it's a tad closer to economy than to muscle car...

If you don't want to be raced, then just don't.
Who gives a flying * about other cars and drivers at the light.
I think that's the dumbest reason to not buy a car that you enjoy.

The best thing to do is if someone next to you revs at a light, look 'em dead in the eye and rev back.
But when the light turns green accelerate as normal.
Pisses them off every time 😉
