At about 6:00 am this morning, I took my walk around the building on one of my breaks. I decided to take a peek into the dumpster out back to see if there were any old PC components I could use. I've never been a "dumpster diver" but I figured what the hell.

So I peer over the edge of the wall surrounding the dumpster to see an animal curled up into a ball. It appeared to be sleeping. I remained very quiet, not to disturb it in case it really was alive (originally I assumed it to be dead). Anyhow, I went inside and told my co-worker who kind of ignored me. "Oh yeah...racoon...right. There a lot of racoons out here." So I left it at that.

Well about 20 minutes later he comes back from a cigarette break and he's all excited. "Dude! That racoon is alive!". It occured to me earlier that the only reason it was probably in there was because it was trapped. The dumpster was nearly empty and it had high walls. Also, there were feces near where he was sleeping. So we decided to "rescue" it.

We took a look outside the dumpster and there were some pallets stacked up against the wall. Apparently that's how it got in the first place. Anyhow, we dropped a pallet into the dumpster and quickly got out of the way. The racoon was all excited by now, hissing and jumping at the walls of the dumpster trying to get out. We ran inside LOL. We were scared of the damn thing.

Anyway, we decided to leave it alone and let it find it's own way out. We came back out shortly, to see the little guy on the walls of the concrete barrier surrounding the dumpsters. He was obviously too scared to jump (about 5 feet or so). So being the humane creatures we are, we propped a pallet against the wall so he could climb down. We stood back and waited.

Eventually, he made it down. He was out of our sight for a few seconds then we saw him scurrying away. TOWARDS THE INTERSTATE!!! Our building is right off the highway. We saw him cross the ditch, then he made his break for the open road. A car narrowly avoided him. Then we heard a horrible sounding "THUD!" :( He hadn't even made across two lanes of a four lane interstate before he got squished.

Needless to say, we felt horrible. After all that trouble to rescue the little guy (to make it worse, he was a young one) only to see his life ended so shortly. Anyway, I rarely share the events of my RL here, but I felt compelled to tell my story.

Don't sweat it. He died quicker that way, rather then getting baked in a dumpster.

Besides, there are *lots* of racoons.
