I live on the edge of town and use a really narrow, dark, hilly and windy backroad to get back and forth between my house and other parts of the city. Last night I was coming home at about 9:30. It was pitch black out.
Caught a large crumpled mass of fur at the end of a driveway and half on the road as I drove by. Found a place to turn around and headed back to look. It was a beautiful looking black lab that had been there a while. She was still alive, but pretty banged up. Front legs were locked up and not moving much. She could still turn her head to see me. It was cold and windy and she was shivering pretty bad.
I drove up the drive to the house and was met by a guy that was not real happy to see somebody there at 9:30 at night. I got him to open the door and explain what happened. I described the dog and it was his Dad's who lives the next house up. So he got packed up and went over to his parents.
I stayed with the dog while they got organized and came back with a car. When they got back the owner asked how fast I was going when I hit her to which I had to explain that I just found her and he immediately changed his tone. I helped them get her in a blanket and into a station wagon and then they headed off to the vet.
I run past that place each weekend for my long runs and the dog is usually in a fenced yard. She barks like she wants to take my leg off each time. But not last night, just an animal suffering.
I'll stop in later and check in. It just sucks that people are so careless that they'll hit an animal and just leave it there.
Squirrels or deer are one thing. Pets are part of a family.
Bleh.
