I live on the edge of town and use a really narrow, dark, hilly and windy backroad to get back and forth between my house and other parts of the city. Last night I was coming home at about 9:30. It was pitch black out.

Caught a large crumpled mass of fur at the end of a driveway and half on the road as I drove by. Found a place to turn around and headed back to look. It was a beautiful looking black lab that had been there a while. She was still alive, but pretty banged up. Front legs were locked up and not moving much. She could still turn her head to see me. It was cold and windy and she was shivering pretty bad.

I drove up the drive to the house and was met by a guy that was not real happy to see somebody there at 9:30 at night. I got him to open the door and explain what happened. I described the dog and it was his Dad's who lives the next house up. So he got packed up and went over to his parents.

I stayed with the dog while they got organized and came back with a car. When they got back the owner asked how fast I was going when I hit her to which I had to explain that I just found her and he immediately changed his tone. I helped them get her in a blanket and into a station wagon and then they headed off to the vet.

I run past that place each weekend for my long runs and the dog is usually in a fenced yard. She barks like she wants to take my leg off each time. But not last night, just an animal suffering.

I'll stop in later and check in. It just sucks that people are so careless that they'll hit an animal and just leave it there.

Squirrels or deer are one thing. Pets are part of a family.

Bleh.

:(

Hope she pulls through. And good on you for stopping - most people probably wouldn't take the time to turn around and go back to check what they saw.

I would have then asked, "What were you doing while your dog was running around the neighborhood and getting hit by a car?"

Well yeah, I mean as long as we're being good Samaritans, we have to make the owners feel even worse, right? What's the point of helping otherwise?

bad situation all around. Sometimes they get out even when you have a good system in place.
Good on you for following up.

I hit a dog once many years ago. I stopped to try to help but it ran off in pain and we couldn't find it. I felt horrible but there really wasn't anything I could do at that point.

Pisses me off that people let their animals run around free like that.

Update us on the dog please. Sucks to hear of an animal suffering like that.

My neighborhood has all kinds of pets running around loose at all times of the day and night. Mostly small dogs, chihuahuas etc. and cats. I came home with my daughter about a month ago to find a dead cat hit right in front of my house. How fast do you have to be going in a residential area to hit a cat in the street? I checked with my neighbors to see if it was there's and it wasn't so I buried it in an empty lot.

OP good on you for following up and helping out!
