I decided to go ahead and do it, because I don't have a degree in the field and my resume needed to show wome evidence of my skills (other than work experience, which in my case also doesn't prove much).

Any of you decide to rush in and get certified at the last minute?

I wonder how much tougher the new test is.

If you know Dos, windows95 and the high-memory functions...then go ahead and take the old A+ test. The new one add windows 98 and 2000 pro. Also, in the new one...the high-memory functions is drop.

No offense dude, but the A+ exam is a joke...any technically minded individual (which I assume you are since you are here) can pass it without even studying. Go for something like an MCSE or a CCNA

I took the new A+ (had to for me job) and it was not that hard, just had a few Win2k questions, and it seems they left out all DOS questions, which was FINE by me :D

Take the new test dude.

David,

From what I read, the A+ exam is supposed require you to demonstrate the skills of a hardware technician after 6 months on the job. It's not supposed to impress computer engineers. I think the average person with no computer science background or degree in the field and who considers himself "technically minded" will still have to work to pass this test. I'm sure the engineers at Daimler Chrysler aren't too impressed with local auto mechanics - but people like me still have to pay for them and appreciate their service ;).

All in all, I found the test to be easier than I expected, but difficult enough to serve the purpose. It certainly doesn't indicate a pioneer in the field, but it's still tough enough to weed out the 10th grade English teacher who is a "computer whiz" because he uses MS Office and built his own computer.

It was perfect for a person like me, who has the skills but not the evidence of those skills. It will help me get my foot in the door (which is all I need), when in the past my resume would be ignored because the little Human Resources was tossing out the ones that didn't show a certification. :)
