Last chance for my WRT54G refurb- drops wireless connectivity every 2 days

I'm getting awfully darn tired of pulling the attic ladder down to scale into the frigid summit of my home where I keep my Motorola Surfboard cable modem and my 3-month old WRT54G refurb router I got at Fry's for $29.99. Every two days all of my wireless devices lose connectivity and I have to go give the WRT54G a cold boot in the pants.

But I just read up on the DD-WRT stuff for the first time (only heard stuff about it in passing before) and it's got me interested... but will a firmware patch solve this issue or do I just have defective hardware? All of my wireless adaptors are G or less (Linksys) so I'm not gung-ho on moving to N yet. You make the call. Please?

DD-WRT bricked my trusty Linksys WRT54G version 3.0 I can't get it back to life anymore no matter how hard I tried to get it back to orginal firmware. I just switched to Dlink router because of videophone only work with Dlink not Linksys.

have you tried using just the latest official firmware yet? ive had that fix a couple of WRT54Gs before

otherwise, dd-wrt is worth a shot if the only other option is to pitch the router

Yep, next option is to go pick up a highly reviewed and regarded D-Link draft-n router (forgot the model name obviously) that I just stumbled upon yesterday at Best Buy for about $60. I used to be a D-Link guy with all my equipment, but the Cisco affiliation and cool blue and gray cases of Linksys equipment (and relatively good reviews) drew me away. I'll be making a return if DD-WRT doesn't work this weekend- thanks.

I will not comment on the quality of Linksys as I do not own one.
My router / dsl modem is a Westell (free with Verizon DSL) and it
works ok .. And there are some junk products in any maker's line.
You buy the least costly and it probably won't work as well as the
more expensive version.
