The original flash mob? It started out as a bunch of guys that got together and burned a big effigy on a beach. It drew a crowd and the varied responses were very interesting, so they kept doing it and the crowd got bigger and bigger until they got kicked off the beach in CA and moved to the desert in AZ and it became a longer "festival."
People camp out in the desert and put on various types of performance art. Almost like a big fringe festival in the desert.
The survivalist and performer in me was very interested in Burning Man but as I read more and more accounts as the years pass of the growing throngs, I have come to the conclusion that it really is mostly a bunch of stoner wannabee hippies polluting the desert.
Like so many other things, it started out as a great thing, but as it grew in popularity, it lost its luster.
