Lasik: does it correct vision only, or does it also stop your vision from gettin worse

well i have right near -3 for both eyes for my contact prescription

luckily my family is on eye insurance so they cover the cost of exams, and some of the contacts cost.

however my mom is around -8 contact prescription for both eyes.

and i dont want to not have eye insurance when i get out of college, however lasik is not covered in our current eye plan.

so i was wondering if i had lasik, will it stop my eyes from getting worse, or just treat them, and they might degenerate over time?

i do NOT want to get to where my mom is, as our opthamologist says it is almost impossible for my mom to have lasik and not need contacts for reading, and driving afterwards.

any suggestions?

MIKE

I'm no doctor but my father got Lasik about 6 months ago and he was told it stops your vision from deteriorating. And AFAIK it has for him.

They may degenerate (anybody's eyes can and most do), but it will bring your eyes to the point you no longer have to wear contacs/glasses, and you can drive legally without anything.

So to answer your question: They correct. There is nothing else they can do. THey can't future proof degeneration.

From what I know they don't do lasik until your eyes have stopped getting worse. Your prescription has to have been the same for a certain amount of time (in the cases I know it was 2 years) before they will do the surgery. I don't believe that the current surgery prevents the loss of flexibility in the lens of your eye that accompanies aging and makes us get reading glasses in the post-40 (or 50) age bracket. In both of the cases I know well, there was no deterioration of vision after the surgery and they were 5 and 10 years ago.

Darn. I thought the double post demon had gone on to bother other posters - no such luck.

Remember, Lasik or any kind of cornea surgery will NOT correct Presbyopia! Sooner or later, we are all going to need bifocals or readers(such as half eye frames). When you reach into your early or late forties, you'll know what I mean.

Most doctors will do it at any age since it can be redone later on. If you are to the point that your eys have not changed in awhile and are over 30-35 they "should" recommend that you under correct one of your eyes so later on you will not need the reading glasses. This was all mentioned at my recent initial appointment to have it done.

A guy at my work had lasik done and about a year later he is wearing glasses again cause his eyes apparently got worse......so YMMV.
