Laserjet 4000N any good?

Hey guys, I just got an HP laserjet 4000N printer for free.. anyone know if this is a decent printer? Seems pretty nice.

Josh

If I tell you that it sucks, are you going to give it to me? 😀 We got bunches of those at work. I think they work great, and don't break nearly as easily as 1100s or 1200s, or the older models.

I wish it was black though. 🙁 Now that I bought the logitech cordless freedom optical mouse and keyboard, everything for my computer is black, except the printer.. I've never seen a black printer.

I use one at home. It is fast and reliable. Better than anything you can buy new for $1000. If you get the network card to go with it, it is even better. You can get high yield cartridge at very low price. Long term cost is very low too.

The Laserjet 4000N is a great print. It will last you for years. Just print a configuration page to see the total page count and pages since last maintenance on it. I use have a 4050N at home and the only thing I have done to the printer is buy a new tuner cartridge.

<< Just print a configuration page to see the total page count and pages since last maintenance on it. >>

How can I do that? 🙂

Josh

Pages Since Last Maintenance = 53202

Hm... a toner for this thing really lasts that long??? It still looks crisp and dark.

Josh

That is a good page count Since Last Maintenance for you. You can printer 146,798 more pages before you need to do the maintenance yourself. The standard tuner cartridge is good for about 6000 pages and the high yield one is about 10,000 pages. Enjoy it.

They are definitely good printers, a few things to keep in mind...

- Toner cartridge life is figured at 5% coverage. Cartridges will last a long time if it's only one person using the printer, it's designed as a workgroup printer.
- Maintenance cycle is 200K pages. After that the printer will request a maintenance kit, which includes: Fuser, transfer roller, feed/separation rollers for each tray, & the pickup roller for tray 1. These kits are not cheap, but considering the use you get out of them they're not bad.
- Make use of the jetdirect card, that's an expensive option. 🙂

The 1100 & 2100 series are not even in the same class as a 4000/4050/4100. Their duty cycle is much lower, & they simply aren't supposed to be a workhorse workgroup printer. The 4000 comes in the same line as the 4+'s, 4v's, etc. Printers that 6 years later people are still using them.

Sorry, it really sucks. You should give it to me so my family members will stop using my Laserjet 4050 to print over the network. 😀

Seriously, that printer rocks. You really pulled something off there. It is the same as the LJ4050 that I have, except that it has a 100MHz instead of a 133MHz RISC processor in it (which is plenty fast enough), and yours has a network port built in (hence, the N). The 4000/4050 series was THE finest regular format workgroup laser HP ever made that wasn't just too big for home use, until they came out with the 4100 series last year (which looks strangely identical to the 4000/4050, prints a little faster, and for some crazy reason uses a different number cartridge, with costs a lot more, and looks almost exactly like the one for the 4000/4050 - methinks they put some sort of a little plastic bump on it somewhere so that 4100 cartridges won't fit the 4000/4050 and vice versa so they could raise the price of cartridges again). You can get a 10,000 (yes, TEN THOUSAND) page print cartridge for these things, new, for about $130 ($80-$100 if you visit the hot deals forum and know how to look for bargains - it is the 4127X). Anyway, you have a great printer there. And for free? How did you pull that one off? Congrats.

Nack

My 3 yr old ls 4000N is still going strong! I love the networking feature, its ease of use and setup. It's a great little printer and I would never replace it.

Quality = execellent
Speed = REALLY fast 😀
Value = great

1 thing tho...check how much memory is in that printer, you should upgrade if there's not enough for what you want to do with it. I have 20MB and that's good enough for me to send a nice big file through without slowdown.

Only 8megs in there now.. I was wondering what kind of memory it takes, and how exactly I install it? I didn't get a manual with this thing.

I hope it's not edo ram.... I just gave away 48 of megs of that.
