Got this printer on sale a few weeks back at Staples and just deposited my $65 rebate check which came in the mail yesterday. I'm very happy with this little LaserJet 1018 -- it prints fast and provides beautiful output. For a total cost of about $60 dollars after rebate, I have no complaints about this printer and am very impressed with the output and paper handling. I've already tried various media -- thin, thick, card stock, labels, envelopes, recycled, transparancy -- and it handles everything beautifully.
The only drawback that I can see is that there is no input tray cover available from HP. But when I look closely at the printer, it seems to have the notches and such to fit one. Plus, the printer is virtually identical to other 1xxx models, such as the 1022 and 1025, and some of those models include an input tray cover or can accomodate one being sold on the HP parts website.
So my question is this -- does anyone here happen to work in small office and have access to both a 1018 and another 1xxx series printer with an input tray cover? Could you check and see if it fits? If so, I'm going to order one right away. Yes, $17 for a hunk of plastic seems excessive, but I care about printing.
I also like the idea of keeping the paper covered, preventing dust from getting into the machine. Although the toner carts include the drum, keeping the machine as dust free as possible, I think, is a smart idea.
My gut tells me that the input tray cover that's out there for other models would fit just fine. But I don't want to order something only to find out it doesn't fit.
I could take some detailed photos of the paper tray area, in case someone has an 1xxx series printer with an input tray cover but has no access to a 1018.
note: those of you who bought this printer with price matches, coupons or other discounts on top of the $65 rebate are screwed. HP is not honoring the rebate for people who bought the printer at a less than MSRP retail price. I saw a lot of people get screwed on fatwallet and slickdeals forum threads who thought they could get this printer for free or make a profit off the rebate. I just paid the sticker price at Staples and did the easy rebate program online. No mail or cutting out UPCs! It took 3 weeks from submitting the form to having the check in hand. A $60 laser sounds good to me. ;D
Thanks in advance, guys. Happy printing.
