laser wire strippers

i think it would be a very useful tool to have in my arsenal of stuff in the garage, so i was wondering if it is possible to make or buy one.

any information would be helpful...

and before any asks, yes i have searched google for a while and came up with nothing.
 
a laser gun to shoot off the insulation of the wires???? or ? ? ? ? what exactly are you lookin for here?
 
Err, it would be cheaper to hire a person to stand there and strip the wire for you. Energy cost is too great these days.

it exists and no it wouldnt be cheaper to pay someone to stand there and do it for me.

not likely, a laser with enough power to evaporate wire insulation will come on a platform encased with eye protection. At the very least it will be destop size. And there is no high power laser minitualization.

The question would be more like "Why?". Unless you're doing delicate work where moving the wires is dangerous or impossible it's basically useless.

Is this a fact? (that they are real).. I remember seeing 'this' device in air force one (?) movie.. with harison ford i believe...
 
I can't find any reference to a hand laser wire stripper. All I can find is reference to hand tools, but nothing more specific than that.
 
i've only ever seen it in that movie 'executive decision'. steven seagals team used it to strip the covering away on wires etc

I know this is 2013 now, just thought it was funny to read. Answer is a magnifying lens! Powered by the sun. Also I have seen a laser that does that but it was attached to a larger unit, not unlike a dremel with a wand attachment. Also the make light sabers now that use intense lasers class ?, however modded with a refracting lens it might get hot enough to melt the wire. Might be easier to make a miniature butane lighter. Your best bet is wickedlasers.com, but expect to wait a few minutes per wire.
 
"Hot wire", wire strippers have been around for at least 50 years and will do everything a laser stripper would do.
 
10W CO2 lasers are the smallest that I have seen used in laser wire strippers. This can be expensive. At the business end, radial + length cutting and/or spiral cutting fanciness add to the expense. But a stepper & linear table might be had for little

You might be able to find other laser sources but CO2 is pretty safe. Glare off the target is the concern here. Excimer is something to avoid.

These are great for no knicks, odd shaped cables, & no knicks.
 
It seems like all you need the laser for would be the initial 'cut' through the insulator. The separated piece could then be slipped off with conventional means (pliers). This would assure damage-free wire stripping, and I bet it could be done with no more than 2 watts.
 
as an electrician, ive never heard of them. but as an electrician, i dont see why that wouldnt be totally awesome.

as it is, to properly strip difficult cable you have to shave the end off like a pencil. youll still knick the wire, but it will be shaved not cut. shaved wont snap off.

but if you can use light to make a clean score without hurting the wire itself, that would be cats ass. even better would be the ability to run the laser down the length to strip off feet of coating at once.
 
For what it is worth, my brother-in-law works for a big time Cable TV company. He told me that the 'digital' signal runs mostly around the 'outside' of the cable (meaning the biggest diameter portion of the conductor part of cabling). He knew this because everyone got trained on how to use the new cable strippers that the company was giving out. They were designed not to nick the 'center core'.

Not really, IIRC, laser strippers promise to do a lot more. But, I could be wrong, I was drunk and I never did go into the Champagne Room...
