I wondered if there's a difference anymore
What benefits a laser have over an inkjet now a days?

I'm thinking of buying one but this topic is making my decision more difficult. I have 2 printers in mind right now.

The Samsung ML-1740 Laser & Canon i560.
One is a laser and one is an inkjet

The ink for the laser is $78 which yield ~3000 pages.
The ink for the i560 is $14 which yield ~550 pages. $14x5 = $70. ~2750 pages.

So...what do you guys think i should get? are laser more reliable than inkjet or something?

I hate my printer right now. The ink never print out clear even though i tried to clean it so many times and replacing it with new cartridge.

Unless you absolutely, positively need color...then please go with the laser printer.

Inkjet = EVIL

Samsung makes an awesome dirt cheap laser printer. You can often buy their printers for $50 after rebates. Great little machines for the $$.

and more reliable. I've got a laser printer from 98, that still works. Ink jet, ended up drying out after 3 months.

will the laser have the same problems as my inkjet? Like smearing, text doesn't come out clear, white streak going through every lines. etc...

I don't know what could have cause this but i tried changing cartridge, clean the head. nothing help.

Is the laser printer going to experience the same problem as it get old?

no smearing because the toner powder is melted onto the paper at high temperature. laser is known for its crisp text and white streaks are caused by blocked ink ejectors which are not present on laser.

you might get problems if the drum goes bad but the samsung printers use catrdiges that contain the drum

Google. plus the manufacture's claim it yield 740 pages for black. So i gave it a doubtful educated guess of 550 pages

Ok thanks guys. I'm going to buy the laser printer.

I don't really ever need to print color. If i need to print pictures, there's Walgreen & Walmart.

So the laser is more reliable and there's no smearing & white streaking?

740 is likely on the highest-speed, lowest quality draft.

I would probably say ~400 pages, if that.

Laser gives a MUCH higher quality (more dots per inch) and an ink jet.
But ink jets let you do color quite cheaply compared to color laser pringers.

If I could afford it I would get one of those Xerox Phaser Printers that use the solid wax/inks. Pretty cheap ~$200 to change the black & colour wax blocks.

The wax ink is cheap but the initall buying of the machine is more expensive then other colour lasers.

Outside of color, if you intend to use a highligher on any of your printouts, you better get a laser. The ink will smear otherwise. Speedwise, my Canon i810 prints out just as fast as my Samsung ML-1740.

laser, it will pay for itself in the long term with better quality, fewer problems, cheaper toner
