I'm currently in the market for a laser printer in the $300-500 range. I was convinced to get the HP 1320 until today when I saw that I could get the Samsung CLP-510N color laser for the same price. While color isn't something that I really need (I use an inkjet for photos), it would be nice to have color in case I need it, especially if it's the same price. If I opt for the Samsung, what's the catch? Aside from the bigger size and slightly slower speed, is there any reason why I shouldn't get the Samsung?

One thing to watch out for in color lasers is that some significantly short shot the cartridges that come with the printer---and then you are dealing with
a huge costs to replace all four toner cartridges.--a cost often equal to the initial purchase price.

But steves digicams and the nifty stuff forums do have forum sections on this subject. Personally I am of the opinion that if you refill the better inkjets, you can beat
a monochrome laser on text costs and really run rings around a color laser on color. And I am refilling a Canon MP730 and a Canon ip4000. I cost out a plain paper
B/W text page at about .3 cents and a plain paper color page at about a cent in terms of ink consumable costs.

From what I have read most prosumer color Lasers in the sub $500 price range will come in at about a cent to a cent and half on monochrome and eight cents on color-- toner costs.
In my opinion Lasers are great for monochrome text and at high printing volume--with the better monchrome lasers coming in at less than a cent a page toner costs.

But its always your money and your choice---and the color toner will seldom run out until you have printed a few thousand color pages.

To delco007,

I see you posted the somewhat same question with new considerations--and those new considerations should be adressed.

First, any printhead can become clogged---but use a good quality refill ink in a Canon and the problem is minimal---resently read a post have a Canon i960 user just complted
20,000 pages--with refill ink--and is still on the original printhead.

I can't recommmend any HP for refilling ---just way more hassle.--and with a cheap type printhead on the cartridge---your OEM cartridge just does not stand many refills.

The MP750, MP760, and MP780 are multi funtional unchipped Canons--the ip3000, ip4000, and the ip5000 are similarly unchipped--but are not multifuntional printers. Basically any Canon printer using the
BCI-3&6 cartridge line is unchipped and superfine refill candidates

The Canon MP450 is not only chipped, but it also uses rather small cartridges that make it a poor choice for refilling.-----something like the MP500, MP800 uses the larger CLI-5&8 cartridge line--and those models can be refilled but can't use third party compatable cartridges--at least until a chip resetter comes onto the market--and the chips make refilling more hassle.

But don't take my word for it--just google the nifty stuff forums.

Or do take my word for it---I do refill two unchipped Canons---and I save a bundle--and its just almost too easy--and hassle free to boot.---less than $40. of supplies can give you the equivalent of $800. of OEM cartridges.
And I am talking a highly recommended to quality supplier here--not a fly by nite el-cheapie ink.
