I use remanufactured toner/drum cartridges and they work just as good as the originals for much less and most can print more pages than original cartridges. Remanufactured usually put more toner in them instead of the big companies less toner trying to force you buy more cartridges from them.
I think HP's are pretty good in this arena.
I have the HP LJ1000. A cartidge can go for 35-55 dollars, depending on where you look. It gets about 4500 sheets.
I dont know what your needs are, but I have had mine over 3 years and am still using the original toner. Prints great.
I personally own an HP LJ 1012 a small, cheap LJ and its done me well for the year i've used it in college... and my roommate and I have printed tons on it and no signs of toner fading
