Las Vegas trip . recommend camera

I tried doing a search and the stickies seem like they have not been updated in quite a while so any help will be appreciated.

Im going to Las vegas for 5 days next week. Will be my first vacation with my girlfriend (who i will be proposing to during the trip). So i want to take good pictures.

Currently we own 2 cameras, I have a Nikon D5100 which takes great pictures but is too heavy and bulky to be carrying around all day every day during the trip. so that one is out.

My gf has a small Point and shoot (cant remember the brand) but its one of those touch screen LCD - no viewfinder slim cameras, which is convenient to carry around but does not take great pictures, at night or indoors pics look too grainy.

So im sitting here weighing my options on which to take , but im feeling more and more that i might need to buy a new camera thats kind of 'in the middle' of the two i have.

Any recommendations of a good p&s that does not break the bank and that i can buy retail (ie. Bestbuy), i Dont live in the states so buying it online is not an option since im leaving for Vegas in 3 days.

Any modern Canon P&S generally will have better IQ than typical touch-screen gadget cameras (let me guess.. Sony). Even the 300HS comes pretty close to S95 quality from the images I've seen, and that's available for well under $200.
 
Canon G1X if that doesn't break the bank ($800)

If it does, the Canon Elph 300 HS for around $200 would be very nice.

the viewfinders on tiny cameras are almost universally terrible, so no real loss.

either an LX5/S100 type camera or maybe an olympus e-pm1 with the panasonic 20/1.7
 
places that people often neglect that are insanely scenic in vegas are: Mt. Charleston (there are a handful of trails up there)

And my personal favorite, Anniversary Narrow (slot canyon that's approximately 20-30 minutes away from the city -- in the Lake Mead Area)
 
Unless you're going to Lake Mead, the Grand Canyon, or Hoover Dam, I'd wouldn't bother with a good camera for this trip. Remember... most of what happens in Vegas stays there 🙂

I wouldn't have wanted to record my wife's reaction to my proposal... She started crying like a schoolgirl when she saw the ring 🙂

Anyway, back on topic... I love my PowerShot ELPH 310, so I'd pick up one of those of you REALLY want to get a new camera. The 8X zoom on that camera really comes in handy. No viewfinder on that one, but I never used the viewfinder on my old Powershot S45 unless the battery was low.
 
S95 or S100. Last January I bought one and I was packing my 7D and T1i when I said "screw it, I bought a S95 for a reason."

I took it around and wow... its now my Vegas camera of choice. I take it to clubs, outdoors, etc and it does great. I'll still bring my 7D for some pics we snap getting ready for clubbing and prepartying at the hotel, but after that S95 all the way.
 
S95 is a great cam, I imagine the S100 is more of the same. I took my S95 to Chile and the photos were amazing. The raw support is a definite plus if you want to go the extra mile.
 
I think a Sony NEX or micro 4/3 camera makes more sense for low light than any of these P&S options.

Look at the tiny front lens on that Canon S95... how can it possibly be good for low light?
 
Take a look at the Olympus XZ-1. Has some good reviews. I don't have one but am thinking about getting one.

A sensor much larger than the average p&s, a very wide aperture for a p&s and usable ISO up to 3200. A 4/3 will get you a little closer, but is far less pocketable and the OP specifically mentioned wanting something easy to carry.
 
My S95 with the PSC-900 case is super easy to have with you at all times, and very quick to deploy.

I have it with me all the time, while my D7000 often sits in the motel room or console of the car.
