I have a 3 year old Dell Dimension 8250 whose hard drive just got fried, and needs to be replaced.

How do I find out the largest possible hard drive my PC can accomodate? Is there a list of this somewhere?

I believe the biggest you can get right now is 400GB, best would probably be a Seagate 7200.8.
The 7200.9s are coming out soon, they will go up to 500GB.

Also you may want to look into your manual and make sure your motherboard is capable of even seeing 500GB. You probably will need to flash your motherboard's BIOS in order to see the full 500GB.

I agree, there's no guarantee that his 3 year old PC will support 500 GB drives straight away, even though it probably should. It depends on what OS it has/will have, and also on how recent the BIOS revision is.

500GB is the largest, however, in most places the 250GB is the most economical. You'll have to look around but usually the 200GB, 250GB are within $10 to $15 of each other. Sometimes the 300GB models can be had in that price range as well. With the 500GB models (and to a lesser extent the 400GB models) you're paying at least 3x the cost of a 200-250GB HD while only getting 2x the storage.

And here is a quote from the site you linked to

UPDATE 04-09-04: It's been brought to our knowledge that LaCie is combining several hard drives in a RAID array to reach the 1TB storage levels. We haven't received a confirmation email from LaCie regarding this report and the thanks goes to our loyal readers for correcting us.

Funny that a place called Cool Tech Zone wouldn't be able to figure that out themselves.
It's not like LaCie makes their own drives, and somehow I don't think Seagate, HGST, or whoever, would hold back a 1 TB drive just to satisfy LaCie.
