Up for auction on ebay is the largest collection ever. The owner is a local legend and has been written about many times over the years in the newspapers. Used to have a record store but is retiring.

Buyer gets everything the guy owns: the records, the CDs, the music publishing companies, the record labels, the music-related antiques, rights to his patented cleaning systems.

Opening bid: $3,000,000.

Story in today's newspaper.

UPDATE: He's closing down for good. Link to story.

Still sitting on 3 million, a veritable steal. You also get control of his publishing companies, independent labels, some antique recording equipment valued at 100k, plus rights for various products. Even if you just dumped the CDs for @$3 a pop you would recover a cool million. The 29 million he turned down 9 years ago is moot, much of that could have been from his businesses which have since spiraled down in value.

I will toss in $100, we just need 49,999 more AT'ers so we have room to bid up to 5 million. It ends at 9am, we better get moving.

He waited too long.

No one wants his dying, expensive medium, that's why it has no bids.

It could be done for about 10 grand max, mirrored onto a series of hard disks.

If that were true books would have no value...

I'd buy it if I had a net worth of 10-15mil

Did you read it? 3 million vinyls, plus what, 600k CD's? Even at $1 a record, you're still looking at the value of the CD's, companies, label, and antiques.

And many of those vinyls are worth well over $1

3mil vinyls for 3mil? That's a fucking steal. I wish I had the money, as I'm sure he has records nobody else does.

What does this mean (from the article)?

Mr. Mawhinney estimates the value at $50 million and said that CD Now nearly bought it for $28.5 million earlier in the decade, just before stock in the online Web site plummeted.

CD Now is a website, they almost bought his collection, but then for some reason their stock dove and they probably ran out of money. I'm pretty sure that's what it means.

I've read a few other articles about this guy and his collection. From what I understand most of his collection consists of common records or shit no one wants to hear and I'm guessing this is why he's trying to sell it all off in one block. Best of luck to him.

3 million records... figure 30 minutes apiece... 60 minutes in an hour, 24 hours in a day, 365 days in a year... unless I screwed up somewhere, that's 171 years worth of music. I think you're missing the point...
