Size preference? Viewing distance? LCD or plasma?

Whatever...I'll just recommend the Samsung LN40A450...Samsung's top of the line 720P LCD series (2008 model). I just picked one up for $999CDN before taxes, so (assuming you're in the US) it should be right within your budget.

It's a beautiful screen. Looks fantastic with XBOX360, PS3, Blu-Ray/DVD, and SD/HD cable feeds.

I recommend the LN40A650...it's freaking awesome...although its a few hundred more than the $1200 you wanna spend (~1500 @amazon).

Decent reviews too. Higher end display at bargain price.

Decent panel with good processing. Definitely not a high end display, but a great price/performance. I hear the blacks on that panel are nothing to write home about, but the HQV processor is great.

My only worry is Syntax-Brillian (Olevias Parent) is having some financial difficulties at the moment.

Olevia is crap, stay away!! See this post for proof.

Either buy the LN40A530 that Genx87 mentioned, or save and get the LN40A650 that Kazaam recommended. You really can go wrong with either.

Search your local Sears and see if they have any of the Sony A3000 series SXRD HDTVs in stock.

Costco has a 50" Panasonic for 1299...720p/1080i only, but very nice overall; just helped my GF set hers up this weekend.

Those are RPTV aren't they? Do they still use the color guns like older rear projection systems used? I guess I'm gunshy to RPTV after having a Toshiba RPTV HD set blow one about 6 months before the extended warranty ran out. I promptly sold it off and another gun went out 6 months later. That's a $500+ repair.

Says it's a LCoS rip off.

If by LCOS ripoff you mean LCOS renaming then yes. The only 2 companies to make LCOS in full force were SONY and JVC and neither called it LCOS.

Sony called it SXRD, JVC called it HD-ILA. Both names are nothing more than marketing hoopla.

So back to my question - are there any expensive "wear" items that I should be concerned about with this set? No color guns that could go out, no bulbs to be replaced, ect? How are these sets with console games compared to a true LCD? Any risk of image burn or retention?

I ask because I'm in the market for another HDTV to replace a 42" plasma. Looking in the 47" to 50" range and would like something that is 1080p and has very minimal image retention - something that really bothers me with my current plasma and game consoles.

LCoS setus use a bulb just like any other rear projection TV (DLP). This means depending on your luck or how often you use it, you will be replacing a bulb in the near/far future.

The main difference between LCOS and DLP is DLP is a chip that reflects the light, while LCOS is a chip that is a similar size, but contains a window so the light passes through it.

If you dont want image retention or a bulb to replace, LCD is the way to go. The other option is LED DLP (Samsung 61A750). However 61 is as small as they make the LED sets these days.

There are no color guns - they use LCoS chips. There is a bulb, and that might need replacing at some point. They work fine with console games (and I have all three major consoles!). And there's no burn-in or retention to worry about.
