18mpg is terrible. What does it mattter, though? You live in the freaking US of A and if you want a huge engine to make a nice noise (nothing to do with performance), then you damn well are going to get one - it's your right! To hell with the environment, let GWB wipe his arse with the kyoto agreement!

I had a '99 Expedition and didn't have any problems with it, until last year when I think it decided that 5 years was enough and everything started to go... lol.
The MPG did suck...but as a vehicle I liked it.

Two falacies in your statements:
1. Durango 4.7L v-8's do not get 18mpg, especially with a "Wife" behind the wheel. Women are always rushing, for this occasion or that, plus picking up kids from soccer, school, etc.
2. Brakes don't get replaced under warranty, since they are a normal wear and tear item.
There might be a 3rd lie in here somewhere...gimme a sec, I'll find it. Oh, yeah, no gas in USA is 2.30 per gallon.

vi...fark! knew this california thing was over-inflated. Maybe I ought to move back to where I was born. (Omaha) 😉 I'll bet you can still find a decent house to buy for about $150k too? Thought so. I'm so out of here. Oh, wait, I gotta get my check, then spend all of it on gas, rent, car payments and inflated groceries. Oh-******, were trapped here!🙂

Hey - SOME of us buy SUVs to actually USE them for towing, not just as oversized people-movers and to "hear big engines" :roll:
I'd gladly buy a lightweight/hybrid that gets 30-40 MPG if it could do that *AND* tow my 3500lbs of camper, gear, and people. Sadly, no automotive manufacturers have come up with such a "holy grail" item yet.
House prices are still reasonable...it's the taxes that are freaking INSANE!!!!
My house is valued around $190k. It's around 2200 finished sq/ft on a very small lot.
Property taxes on it? $5200 damned dollars a year! BAH!
Sales tax is higher here than in any other surrounding state. Income tax is higher here. And the freaking city IS STILL out of money.
When I get the chance, I'm looking to move back across the river to Iowa. Where prices are much more reasonable comparatively.
Can you imagine a politician over there who would commit political suicide by daring to increase taxes to a level whereby the population would have to consider buying a smaller, more economic and efficient(cue people fainting) car?

It also should be mentioned that diesel engines have far more torque lower down thus being hugely superior to petrol engines when it comes to off-road and towing... not that any of that often happens with the vehicles in question. I'd say it's more of a 'making up for other things' situation, or simply to feel more powerful on the road - we get it over here a lot too, but at least the fvckers have to pay heavily for it... Not to mention the dangers to the public (eg SUVs are great at killing children... a lot better than small, lower cars with cushioned bonnets (hoods)).
It all boils down to the fact that a 3.0L turbo diesel is everything the public would need to tow boats/caravans/trailers or have enough power to climb serious terrain. A 4.7L petrol? what's the point other than the sound/mr macho feeling?

heh, my grandfather built a beautiful home on 28th and martin avenue, back in the 30's. When my dad used to take us back there to visit, in the 60's thru 70's, I remember it was a nice neighborhood, Lots of big mature trees lining the streets. There was still alot of "heart land" values there. I also remember dad taking us down to Lake st., so we could see what a ghetto looked like.

this is an old dumb topic. find something new to complain about, like your dog died, or your girl left you for me. oh, and do me a favor, if you are going to buy a large suv. dont complain about gas because it was your stupid fault for doing it. not to mention, you couldnt give me a POS ford.

Am I complaining? Course not! If that was not what we wanted to drive, we could change it. I pissed away about $40k for that rig. If I'd have wanted something else, at that time, I could have pissed away $40k on that too. That's what my wife wanted. Next week she might want a new SL Mercedes. If so, I'll probably piss again! 😉

My excursion gets 11.5 MP/G with its V10.
1. Yes it does. She drives like an old lady. When I drive it, I can usually average about 14mpg.
2. I did not say it was normal wear and tear. I said it was a problem. If I wanted to include normal wear and tear, I would have mentioned oil changes, tires, etc.
3. Lie? I don't think so. I just filled up at a BP this morning for $2.39/gallon. I went by the Mobil, or whatever gas station my wife fills up at last night, and it was $2.25/gallon.
It seems you think that you know everything. Please don't tell me that I am wrong when I know the facts and you are speculating. :disgust:

Before I married my wife, she lived on a farm with her parents. The road was low maintainence, and therefore was not plowed in a timely manner. She is a nurse and needed to be at work to relieve the previous shift, and it's pretty hard to get out of the driveway with a foot of snow covering it in a Prius.
