Large slow loading top ad forcing the page down

There was a topic not long ago names something like "Slow loading top ad...".

It was in regards to the top ad not loading right away, then when it did load, it would force the page down about an inch. In response, a buffer zone was implemented at the top of the page to accommodate the 90 pixel tall ads that would eventually load. This resolved the issue.

However, there are now a few ads in the rotation that are 250 pixels tall, and creating the issue again.

Please fix this. It's making me mis-click topics.
 
Holy moly where did this thing come from? Insanity! Why is a third of my screen an ad that slow to load?
 
Unfortunately I don't have any good news for you guys on this matter. We could resize the top to 250px, but that would look a little ridiculous when there isn't a larger ad loaded into that spot.

As for the 250px ads themselves, those are a Purch decision. It's not my call to have them removed, though all feedback on ads is passed on to the appropriate parties at Purch.
 
I don't mind adverts and sometimes they are of interest and I go onto them but decisions like this just push more and more users to install ad blockers.

Can you undo the delay? That is the only part of the ad that really bugs me, hitting the wrong thing if I don't wait for the ad to load.

For a tech site I'm disappointed with the way this is being handled and user friendliness should be a top priority.
 
Tell Purch I'm installing adblock. For something so simple, I'm even surprised at how rage inducing this is - and I'm among those raging hardest.

If adblock doesn't work, I'll take my interest elsewhere.
 
you can also stop that popup add on the main site that comes up every time i change a page in an article
 
I understand ads pay for my free access so I won't be installing an ad blocker, but:

I'd rather have the extra whitespace all the time than have the page jump down 50% of the time after N seconds, often just as I'm about to click a link.

you can selectively block ads with uBlock Origin

I'm curious, how many other people feel this way? Obviously it's not a technical problem, it's just a design choice. If a ton of users really want a 250px block, then this is something we can still do.

It is REALLY annoying on my phone. I don't have as much a problem with it on my desktop.

It's not that anyone wants a 250px block, it's that everyone wants a page rhat doesn't jump down when loading.

On mobile, you select a link and the page jumps while you are selecting. so you end up with the wrong link.

Now, you have to go back and try again.
5+ seconds are wasted at minium even when on Wifi. More if it is coming across 3G.

I find the idea of any ad that takes up a large fraction (1/4 - 1/3) of my screen offensive. (I say the idea because I've been using AdBlock for many years, and will continue to do so.)

I do imagine that, on large enough screens, the ad could be set to not take up 1/4 - 1/3 of my screen, if it were shifted over to the right and the forum controls shifted to the left, like so:

But a 250px ad just looks out-of-place anywhere up there. I'd prefer a pop-up to a 250px ad space. (Preferably a non-modal, dismiss-able pop-up that appeared at the top of the screen.)
 
So I clicked on one of your ads. You're welcome. It was a GUNNAR glasses one. Never again will I click on a large size banner on this website.

Now 90% of the banner ads I see are either large or for GUNNAR. I have nothing against this company, seems legit. But by interacting with the ad the way it wants me to, now all I get are page-jumping banner ads. Frustration extreme.

this is working as intended. it doubles adviews
 
I absolutely love having to wait 5-20 seconds after clicking on a post to be able to use the scroll bar or start typing a replay

its awesome
