my dad is a photographer. he does digital photography but know next to nothing about computers. weird, right?

anyway, he regularly has several hundred photos that he needs to put on his site. this weekend we got his new site up and put up almost 500 photos.

i'm having him use goldmine as the image gallery. this is free with the website. anyway, since he doesn't know much trying to explain or teach him stuff is such a major pain in the ass. i've had to teach him how to resize and add watermarks to his photos. he can't do this without the instruction sheet i typed up step by step for him, and then he still has problems.

is there something out there that might be easier to use for him and also be able to add large batches of files like that?

i used ftp to upload those near 500 photos and it took forever. he is getting an upgrade to his dsl this week so that should help a little, but still, nearly 500 photos is alot.
i haven't shown him how to use an ftp program yet either, which is only going to confuse him even more.

Does he already have photoshop? It does batch processing.

resizing and watermarking isn't the problem really, its getting the large amount of photos online and maintaining them easily for him.

Whoa! wish i knew about that before. that has a lot of stuff he would like to be able to do.
how easy is it to upload though? like i said, he uloaded almost 500 pictures of one event this weekend for people to look at so they could decide which ones they wanted.

may have to look into canceling the webhost we have now and hope we can get a refund.

I use smugmug. Batch uploading is no problem at all. All you do is drag and drop the photos into its uploader and let it do its thing. There's also a little program you can use that lets you right click on a photo directory and upload it to smugmug.

The speeds are fast, the pro level lets you basically customize your web page entirely, the auto-thumbnail and built-in shopping cart are cool, but it's pricey for a non-pro.

so he could do like 400 pictures in 1 upload session, not like 10 at a time?

for the watermarking/resizing, I would look to ImageMagick. I wrote a quick shell script, and showed my wife how you drop them in this directory, then run this file, and then you have your smaller/ready for web files here. worked great.

Echo Smugmug. Been using that for a few years now. Samples are in the link below. It ain't free, but the annual cost is easy, and it is simple to use.
