Large LCD owners - do you notice flicker?

i just picked up a acer p221w 22" 1680x1050 lcd and notice a faint flicker even when the screen is still. almost like a power issue w/ the monitor. anybody else notice this on certain lcds?

i am going to be taking it back, but like the size. is this a bunk lcd or is this normal for this model?

do most of the larger lcds not have this problem? i would really like to get another 22 or maybe 24 as my 4850 is able to push this resolution fine for the games i play (bf2, coh:eek:f, cod4), so thinking 1920x1200 may be doable too.

thanks in advance,
bob

I've never seen any type of flicker on an LCD and I'm very sensitive to it on CRT's.

5ms.

it is not a flicker during the game, actually i see it more on a regular static website - like a grey or white background, i see it flicker, like a crt that has too low of a refresh rate or even a light bulb. like on this page i can see a faint flicker. during gaming, no ghosting or flickering, maybe because i am concentrating on the game and not a static item?

fwiw, i am extremely sensitive to all kinds of flickering lights - flourescent, incandescent, cfl, basically anything 80hz and below i pick it up and it is very annoying. and i have had neurological issues for 25+ yrs.

Did you try different refresh rates in the 60 -75 Hz range?

I've had LCD monitor / graphics card combinations where setting the refresh to a different value got rid of flicker.

Some monitors have a backlight with adjustable brightness - and the backlight may flicker as part of the brightness control.

We have monitors like this at work - yeah, it's great that the backlight brightness changes with room brightness, etc. but the monitors flicker like mad. Move your eyes past them and you see a whole set of 'rainbows'.

i don't see it on my laptops, my 40lcd, my 37lcd, my 17lcd, just this 22.....it almost has the same effect of when you need to change a flourescent light bulb, that flicker, just not as obvious but still there

I dunno man. Did you buy it local? If so, did you notice it on the display model? If not, I would say exchange it for another and see if that solves your problem.

it is going back tomorrow, and no, i didn't notice on the display model, but they weren't working correctly, so who knows. i think i am going to get a 24 anyway since my 4850 was able to do everything i need it to game wise @ 60-80fps on all high settings, so 1920x1200 will give me more real estate so when i am doing a bit of editing whether it be web, photo, video, audio or whatever i will be able to have multiple programs opened at once all on the screen, and then use my 17" as the final testing since i use either 1024x760 or 1280x1024 as minimums now for web stuff :)

now the hunt for a nice, decently priced 24" unit...any ideas? not to worried about what type of panel, just no flicker, :)

edit - just looking around @ 24" = $350+...damn, maybe 1680x1050 is ok to save a ~$150

Taking it back is the right thing to do. LCDs really do not flicker if they are working properly.

No it sounds like a backlight inverter problem. If the backlight is indeed controlled by a photodetector as Mark pointed out it may have a problem with hysteresis. This can be caused by another source of flickering light (could even be invisible) or a cell phone. Those are possibilities but remote IMO. Most likely the inverter OR fluorescent tubes/wiring is faulty and the output is flickering. We call it the Geissler Tube Effect.

My 28" Hanns-G will sometimes flicker when first powered up - thankfully it goes away in about a minute. In my case, it definately a backlight problem, flickering in the same way a flourescent light fixture might flicker.

When you use a single Hanns-G monitor is that called a Hanns Solo?

I have the same lcd monitor at home, really like it. I don't have any flicker issues with it? Have you checked the refresh rate? if the refresh rate is normal, I would say it's defective
