i have read that there seems to be some weird reliability issues w/ 1+TB hdds. is there anything to this?

planning on rebuiliding the home server w/ server 2k8, 2GB, dc amd or intel cpu w/ a m/b w/ integrated gpu and raid controller - nothing fancy just an upgrade as my current sc 939 is getting a bit worked over.

need 1-2TB that will be in a raid1 array for storage - 5400rpm is fine as the array will hold images of all the other computers and also audio/video, so lots of big files, not lots of tiny files. boot drive will be probably be either 7.2k ide drive or a 74GB 15k scsi drive since i have an extra card and cable.

all hdds will have active cooling and machine will be on 24/7 and only rebooted for updates. machine is on a ups.

only use raid sata drives in raid-1; you will get too many smart errors if you use a consumer generic 1TB in raid-1

or use jbod.

I bought an external HDD, a generic one, and it has a Hitachi GST 1TB drive. I've read horror stories about IBM drives, and I know IBM HDD business was acquired by Hitachi GST.

Any comment on recent Hitachi drives?

I've had half a dozen 1TB or larger disks, and all are, so far, touch wood/cross fingers, still going strong. Including two of the original Hitachi 7K1000's.

I've actually not had any drives fail in a few years now, not since I stopped buying Maxtors

good to hear, do you run active cooling on them? i am trying to figure out why on some forums people claim the larger hdds are not as reliable. i figure that a 1TB is 3x 333GB platters or are they 4x 250GB? or is the density on the platter higher so as to make temperature more of an issue?

If I remember the infamous google study correctly, they found that temperature has only a very small influenze on the AFR..

jbod is stupid, it has none of the benefits of raid and all the drawbacks...
it is better to have two completely seperate drives than jbod.

At the moment, no. In the past, yes kinda. They were in front of a 120mm intake fan in an old case. In the cases they're in now I don't think they are.

I think the only issues are with the seagate drives. I avoid those now. I'm lucky as I never been hit with issues with the ones I do own. I've had 3 Hitachi's in MD raid 5 in my main server with zero issues. I have lot of VMs and stuff on those drives too.
