jliechty, I've used and played around with scaling fonts. My opinion, they are a pain in the butt and cause all sorts of problems with layout. It's something we will do in fusetalk, but it just isn't a big priority thing right now.
The problem is the fixed pixel layout, not the relative scaled fonts.
I could care less about large fonts myself (I prefer to get more text on the screen). However, the large font fans may be in for a surprise, and the reasons for this surprise annoy me also:
The current layout requires your browser window to be at least 1024 pixels wide in order not to get a horizontal scrollbar. Horizontal scrollbars suck. Even though I am in 2048x1536, I normally don't have my browser windows that wide - I would rather have multiple windows totally visible on the screen simultaneously. Actually it looks like this is due to top.gif, the overall site navbar, for some reason I don't remember needing the site wide before, was the Anandtech logo previously above the other buttons?
Also, the bars at the top and bottom of each message are explictly made exactly 20 pixels high in the HTML.
a) This looks ugly with normal 100% fonts because there is a huge gap between the bottom of the text on the Reply/Quote/Top/Bottom buttons and the bottom of the bar, and...
b) The fixed size bar doesn't get taller when you make the text big, and with over 150% text zoom the bottom of the letters is outside the bar looking REALLY bad.
I think the pictures on the bar on top of each message are also much bigger, which is why they are taking up all of that bar even though it is bigger now. I would like these pics reduced from 19px high to about 13, and the bar height also reduced.
