Laptops

Here's what I'm looking for. Maybe this will help a little better.

At least a Pentium III 1 Gig...or equivalent AMD
At least 256 MB RAM
At least a 14 inch screen, resolution up to 1024 x 768
An S-video out on the video card
Would be nice with a Mobile Radeon card, or equivalent
CDRW or DVD ROM

I have no need for firewire, or anything like that. I'm looking to spend $1400 or less.

I want at least a two year warranty.

I looked at buy.com earlier and they have an extended warranty plan that you can buy for about $200 that covers the laptop for 3 years. If someone goes wrong, they come to your home and pick up and send it to a repair and service place, then return it to you. If the service shop cannot repair it, then they either give you a check for the entire amount of the original purchase or replace the laptop with an equivalent model. very

It was suggested on another board that netlux was good, but Netlux seems almost too good to be true. I have heard that some companies will put a desktop processor, rather than a mobile processor in a laptop, which creates more heat, etc. so I want something completely reputable and with a kickass warranty.

Anyone have have any experience with Netlux?

Also, some additional questions - do most of the laptops at 1 Gig play divx well? How dependent on the video card is it? Can most of the newer ones play divx crisp and clear with say an 8 or 16 meg graphics card? Also, I would like the ability to plug in two headphones into one jack and I have seen an adapter that can be purchased, not specifically for laptops, but just for anything such as a stereo, etc. that will accomodate two headphones into one jack...any ideas?

Quick question, anyone that has flown Delta international, do they offer laptop hookups in economy class. I can only find them for business class on the website, but the customer service rep thought that they were present in economy class as well. Anyone that can confirm this?

Also, what kind of adapter will I need? Will just any plane/car adapter built for my laptop work or does it need to be something special that Delta recommends?

Ok, I have revised my plans a little. I went to Best Buy today and was impressed with their extended warranty plan for $219 for three years. It supposedly covers lightning, repair, and everything. The sales rep said if something happens in Sweden that we can ship it back to the store in US and they would reimburse us for the shipping. In addition, he also said that you can just bring it into any Best Buy and usually they will just give you a replacement if the problem is not so easily fixed.

Then, people that used to work at Best Buy said that I shouldn't get the extended warranty. That it is hard to get those things accomplished as explained above, that it could be a month before they repair it, etc.

Here's the specs I am looking at:

1 gig Pentium III
256 mb RAM
at least a GeForce 2 Go
at least 14.1 inch screen
integrated nic
56k modem

I am in additional planning to purchase computer insurance for $75 a year that covers lightning, dropped laptop, spill damage, etc.

I have also been looking at Dell and Gateway for their warranties as well. Gateway is on the heavier end of the deal as they have stores where I could just walk in with the laptop. Dell, I'd have to mail it in, and I need my laptop.

Anyone have experience with the above? Best Buy warranties, suggestions, comments on the Gateway systems, etc.?

Considering this one at the moment:

Pentium III 1 Ghz
15" XGA screen
32 MB Geforce 2 Go
256 MB RAM
20 gig HD
CDROM
Airline/car adapter

Total $1623

From Gateway

Opinions?

Thanks 🙂

Keep checking the Dell refurb site for an Inspiron 4000 or 4100, or an 8000 or 8100 if you want a desktop notebook that will mostly stay on your desktop. The 4000 series has everything you ask for and you shoud be able to easily find one under $1500 with everything you want.

😉Try fosa.com. I bought won from them a few months back. pentium1 1 gig 256 ram 20 gig dvd lan firewire modem . they have it for about 1300.00 or so and can be upgraded! GREAT LAPTOP.

:frown:also the fosa I bought uses desktop cpu. but I can run for about 2hrs. not too bad. No heat issues at all.

yes get the claims in writing; those plans are pure profit for the company and usually is comission for the salesperson
