I'm looking to buy a new laptop.. for school use/dvd for road trips/gaming would be nice as well, and I can't decide what to get.. I'm trying to stay in a $1000-$1300 price range. The specs I'm looking for is:

1 ghz
256 ram (would settle for 128 if I need to)
14.1 moniter (at least)
a decent video card
DVD Rom (CD-RW combo would be a plus)

I wanted to go with dell but they seem to be close to $300-$400 more than other brands such as compaq and some Sony's.. I've found some Toshiba's for nice prices but I've heard bad things about them. Any suggestions?

ATI has a new video chipset out, the Radeon 7500 mobility or something to that extent... It beat GeForce2Go hands-down in a Quake3 benchmark.. I would buy a computer that has one of those.

You have a rather tight price range there... 1 grand = not that much in terms of HD space and RAM... But try configuring a Dell.com or Compaq.com laptop - and don't necessarily go for an Int*l-based one 🙂

Take a look at some of the sony ones, I don't think you will be able to get one for that price though, or at least not one with the specs you have listed. Personally I would just go to dell.com and configure one on there. That way you get what you want with no bullsh!t. Well maybe a little bit of it, but dell would be a good place to start the search, probably don't get 256 megs of ram from the factory because it would be cheaper to go and buy more somewhere else, and if you get a small hdd it would also be cheaper as you can find laptop harddrives for pretty good prices at places such as newegg.
