Im looking to buy a laptop in a couple months and I have no clue which brands are good, which ones suck, etc etc.
My price range is less then or around 1500, and I will probably just use it for surfing the internet, playing a few games (nothing real graphics intensive) some programming and photoshopping. Can anyone give me some ideas?

I would wait as long as possible since the new processors are coming out you could buy one of those or save money on current models. The best laptops are made by Dell, IBM, Toshiba and Sony. Personally I prefer Dell and IBM because of their build quality, good hardware and great tech support/warranties. Right now you can get a few deals for $1500 but if you wait I'm sure that you could find a P3/800, 20GB, Windows2000, 8x DVD, 14 or 15" LCD display, 56k/NIC and more for around $1400 which is an amazing price.

Just about when will you be ready to buy?

Hmmm, if I didn't know any better you just contradicted yourself... Photoshop is graphics intensive and memmory intensive... unless you meant 3D intensive.

Oh well, I aint nit picking, I would look at DELL or GATEWAY they have really good warrenty and that is what I would be most concerned about in a laptop! 🙂 happy hunting.

they just cut the price on the p3-900 and 1000 mobile chips, so i bet dell will lower the price on their higher end machines soon. i wouldn't go with the athlon right now, just because they all seem to come with sis crappy chipsets like the 730 with integrated trident crap video and they suck battereies like a mofo

I'd go Dell...so far I've used both Dells and Compaqs, and ...Compaqs suck donkey balls.

As for your price range, as RossMan knows (He helped me find one in a similar price range), Dell refurbished is a pretty good place to look for good deals. You can get the same warrantee as with their normal systems, so there really isn't a diff. I got a kickin' P3 700 system with all the bells and whistles for 1300...and just last night successfully killed ME and installed 2k on the puppy...now it's working like a champ. If you are looking for mediocre gaming/graphics...get one with an ATI M4 32 meg vid board...any more gaming and go with a Gf2Go...although, most told me that the M4 sucked for gaming but I'm able to play Half-Life at 1280x960 at about 55 fps...so it doesn't suck that bad.

Good luck, keep us all updated!
