Hey all,

My friend is in the market for a laptop. He will not game heavily on it (just maybe a quick something between classes...so decent graphics are necessary) and needs a decent amount of power.

He wants to know what the difference between Pentium M and Pentium 4M is & which one is better.

Basically he needs a decent processor/graphics card for moderate load @ a low price...help him choose something :)

Price range 1000-1500...thanks guys!

Pentium M = Centrinos. Range from 1.3-1.7GHz These are great for mobility. Get one that has a 9000pro and you'll have decent graphics, something like 3-5lbs and a good 2-3 hrs of battery life.

Pentium 4M = Northwoods. I think they go as low as 1.7??-3.2GHz w/ HT. You can get a 9600Pro with these, normally. They are extremely powerful "mobile workstations". They have horrible battery life (unless you can find one that supports dual batteries), and can weigh as much as 10lbs.

Find out what he wants. Chances are he'll want to go with something like a 15" 1.4GHz Centrino w/ ATi 9000 and 40GBs

Dell Inspiron 600m. Uses the Pentium M processor and has a Radeon 9000 video. Won't be the best for gaming but it'll get by pretty good.

The Pentium 4M is a P4 made for mobile use. The Pentium M was built from the ground up for use as a mobile processor. It has great battery life and runs nice and cool. I'd highly recommend a Pentium M over a Pentium4M.

Ok, I have 6 laptops:

Dell Inspiron 600m - 1.6GHz Centrino/Radeon 9000
Toshiba P25-S508 - P4HT 2.8GHz/GF FX 5200 Go
Gateway Solo 600s - P4 M 2.0GHz Ti4200 Go
Dell Inspiron 8200 - P4 2.4GHz - Radeon 9000
Dell Inspiron 8500 - P4 2.2GHz - Radeon 9000
Acer TravelMate 800 - 1.6GHz Centrino - Radeon 9000

Far and away, the Centrinos are my choice. I actually prefer the Toshiba over the Dell for screen size (the 600m's screen isn't as big as I'd like, nor do I like the native resolution).

Not true. The Dell Inspiron 5150 is a P4M @ 3.06GHZ and has 5 full hours of battery life. It's a rare one, but they do exist. :)

Check the hot deals section, find which notebooks are good deals, and then read reviews on them.

5 hrs??
All i know is that with a single(standard) battery, dell says it runs for "Upto approximately 4 hours" on its website.
Even with a single battery, its 8 Lbs + and 1.8 inches thick!!
I read ur reply to this here...

But if you are really sure of the 5 hr battery life... i am buying one. Also, what is your opinion about the Inspiron 8500?

Horrible battery life? I've got a Compaq Presario 1510T with a P4M Northwood. It gets 3hrs on one battery- and that's doing DVD playback.

YES FOLKS THE INSPIRON 5150's BATTERY LASTS 5 HOURS...

Laptop magazine tested this using continuous DVD playback. This laptop is the best laptop dollar for dollar on the market right now. If you don't believe me the article link is below. And no I'm not a salesman for Dell. I've had my eye on this laptop since I've read the review and will be getting one soon. Sure it's 7.8 lbs and 1.8 inches thick. I never said it was even close to being the smallest laptop on the market. But that is not what it is built for. It's built to be a desktop replacement and it does that very, very well. If you don't want to carry 7.8lbs around then this isn't the laptop for you... if you want the best overall laptop for the money than you should be all over this.

5 HOURS!!!

Don't forget Athlon XP-M laptops. They are a lot cheaper than Pentium M's, and they do almost as well in terms of speed and battery. The sub $1000 HP/Compaq XP-M's with Radeon 7000 graphics may be a good choice. Ours got 3.5 hrs battery life.

In any case, to get a rough performance estimate, add about 800 or 900 MHz onto the Pentium M clock to get an approximate P4-M speed comparison.

Not arguing here.. just curious how you arrive at this. I've been wondering the conversion ratios myself...

A Pentium M 1.5 ~ P4M 2.4GHz

A few extra MHz after the 2.4GHz of a P4M isn't going to really bother you.

My bro has a Pentium M 1.7GHz and it is up to about a P4M 2.7GHz if not more. The bottle neck is the HD performance now. Well the speed of it is. Not going to compare to my 7200rpm's.

Forgive me for being skeptical, but I'd like to see another source to back this up. I've found that laptop reviews can seem great but can be very unrealistic. I'll believe this when I see some more independent reviews.

and there was a good point earlier, 5 hours is good, but I don't want to lug around a bag of rocks to get it...weight it crucial in these models if you are really looking for mobility...

Yep CNET's test was a little "scientific" then Laptop magazine. They just ran a DVD on a continuous loop.

Yes, that is correct. As I said in a previous post it is not the lightest or the smallest. It is meant more as a desktop replacement. If true mobility is what you are looking for, this is not it. If you are looking to move it once or twice a day then this is a great pick.
