Laptops with varying battery voltage...

Is there an advantage to laptops having lower voltages for their batteries? My old sony vaio laptop had 14v batteries while my IBM T42 has 10.4v batteries that actually run at around 11v... The dell 600m's main battery is 11.1v while the drive bay battery is 12v, why? Doesn't higher voltage have lower resistance? Gotta be some advantage somewhere..
