Laptops that have a 2nd hard drive option

You can add it, but I believe as another thread here stated you need a kit from the HP parts site that gives you the HD rails for the second bay and the cable if you had nor originally purchased a second HD. I think this kit was around 50$.

Hope that helps, I'll keep looking. My DV9500t is now 2 weeks old and I'm lovin it. I too am reading into the second HD option.

Thanks much, heymrdj; that's very helpful. 🙂

It's ridiculous; a fully loaded 9500 costs only $300 more than my Acer TM4000 did 2.5 years ago. And the specs completely blow my little laptop out of the water. 😱

It's really hard to pass on the 9500; any other similarly spec'd laptop by any other manufacturer is at least $500 more.

Damn technology; burns a hole in my pocket everytime. 😛

Ok yes you need a bracket which I will soon post.

Second Hard Disk
I ordered the Hitachi 160 GB TravelStar disk for the second hard drive bay of the DV9k. I noticed only after I opened the laptop that you need to have a special hard drive mounting kit. This kit can be ordered from HP. There are good news and bad news. Good news: you can easily find and order almost any part of the laptop (unlike with my old Fujitsu laptop). The bad news: this kit costs $45.- ($60.- with tax and shipping)! The mounting kit consists of three parts: a metal bracket which holds the disk, the screws and a special connector which connects the hard disk SATA interface to the laptop.

I see 1 or two people with early 9500's complaining that they had to buy an HD with the same size as the one in bay one. Most people have disproved that, such as the exerpt I just posted above with a guy running Linux on his 9000t. He had a 120GB from factory and added a 160GB.

Well this sucks...I can't find the darn thing...I've found it before, not sure why i can't find it now.

You can try HP chat support, they'll direct you I think....I don't think the 9500 has the bay rails?

One of the best things about HP is their documentation; you can find pretty much every detail, drawing, etc on their websites. At work, I buy only HP servers; very happy w/them.

Yeah; a HD would be pretty useless w/o the bracket to mount it and the cable to connect it to the MB. 😛

I'm sure the part#/kit is out there; HP's got everything...you just gotta pay for it.

If I pull the trigger on the laptop, BEFORE I pull said trigger, I'm going to research the total cost of 2nd HD from the factory vs. self-installed 2nd HD. If the diff is $20 or so, i'll just pay HP and reformat everything when I get the box.

Thanks again man; I hope it all works out great for you!

*edit*
Nice link on the bracket kit!

For the kit + a 200GB HD, HP wants 540$ man. Definitely, get the laptop, and then buy the HD and kit yourself. You'll invest what, 150$, 200$ at the most?

Got the info. $35.61 for the kit plus $8.90 for shipping.

$200 for a 250GB 5400 drive from Hitachi (one of the best for laptops).
$120 for a 160GB 5400 drive from Hitachi

HD prices from the egg. You might have better luck ordering with the lappy, may not. Can't remember the price scheme. Me personally, I think I'm gonna save some $$$ for a 250 setup. That'll give me 60 +250. And the 250GB will be a perfect place to store all my VM's for use.
