Laptops, so cute...so dang annoying... (DVD Problem)

A friend of mine has bought a Dell Inspiron 8200 laptop.
The computer has a DVD and a CD-RW drive (two different drives, hence why it doesn't have a floppy). After some trouble with him playing his new Lord of the rings DVD, i offered to take a look at it. I got a Dave MAthews Band DVD to work after i disabled all of the autostart features... so he merrily took it home tried to play his DVD and it still didn't work (all 4 of them).
I've updated all of windows, all drivers from the dell website, and even the anti-virus while i was at it.

And still this is what happens.

Lord of the Rings DVD: The DVD goes in, spins, then ejects, no way to stop that.

Any other DVD: Goes in, won't play, sometimes the computer loses the DVD drive and i have to restart to fix it.


I'm ready to call this drive broken. but i'd like to know all of your expert opinions

See if this thread helps any about disapperaing DVD-ROM.

Looking more here is another thread about diappearing ROM's. here. Look for Bacilus, 3rd from top on the registry change.

Hope this helps any. Also does the DVD play any CD's without problems?
