I have a preconception that a 2.4GHz P4 laptop with 512MB ram is going to be significantly slower than a 2.4GHz desktop with 512MB ram.

I don't know why I think this, I just do.

Am I right? Or are laptops of equal spec as quick as desktops?

If I am right, why?

Laptops are slower, especially with things that are hard drive intensive.

It won't be that much different but keep in mind that it won't have super fast ram or a really fast hard drive, the hard drive will be spinning at 5400rpm or 4400 rpm. The motherboard will probably be different but they don't really make that big of a difference.

laptop are slower mostly because they have slower HDD.

laptop also have slower video card, slower memory.

PowerNow! and SpeedStep CPU also reduce the frequency when you are in Battery mode.
