Laptops modify/upgrade

Is there a way to upgrade a laptop completely. I mean Mb, processor, hd, ram, etc.. If there is a way,could someone help by recomending where to get parts etc. My girlfriend has a older laptop, that needs some work.
 
Depending on the maker
you might be able to get some of the parts from them
but probably cheaper to buy a new one.
You could also always check ebay.
 
Laptops are for the most part not very upgradable. If you want to upgrade, then never buy a laptop. Also when buying a laptop, buy as good a one as you want, becuase they are not very upgradable.
 
Mb--no
processor--many times yes, but requires experience and expertise
ram--yes and usually very easy
hard drive--pc laptops are usually easy, iBooks are hard, powerbooks it depends on the model
optical drive--depends on manufacturer, but you can sometimes buy, say a dell cd-rw/dvd for a specific line and upgrade yourself
