Laptops, IR

so most, if not all laptops come with an IR port
why? what is it used for really?
desktops dont come with it standard
but laptops do
please tell me

It's rarely used these days... in fact it was rarely used ove rthe past few years if not more.

It was primarily used for printing, PDA sync, and some data transfers.

USB and bluetooth have pretty much made IR ports dead.
