Laptops in Japan...

My friend is moving there in a few days and we are trying to find out whether he can buy one there with an English alphabet keyboard? Many thanks.

All the Japanese laptops I have seen have both Japanese and English characters on the keys. I guess you can just change the region to United States in Control Panel to make sure that it uses English layout.

And damn, I am jealous at all the places you have visited in your sig...

What about software? Do you know whether he can get an English copy of Windows there? And the DVD region setting? Will it be set to whatever region Japan is in or can he change it?

( and yes, I travel for my job, mostly 🙂 )

You can change the region setting up to like 5 times in Windows so it doesn't matter what it starts of set to I believe.

Partially true. Those five times are for the drive itself. Once you hit the fifth time, it's locked to that region permanently. There are sites that have RPC1 (region free) firmwares available for tons of drives. After you flash the drive region free, Windows takes over the region coding and you only get one change after you set the region. However, all you need to do is delete a registry key and you can change regions infinitely.
