Both laptops display exactly like the pics on power up.The 1st one started doing it out of nowhere. The 2nd one was slammed shut and started doing it.Both were bought in 2012 and crapped out last year right after the warranty expired.

1st laptop :AMD HP 2000 (not sure exact specs)

2nd laptop : AMD HP Pavillion g6-2218nr

any ideas ? GPU shot maybe ?

I would say bad connection between yr GPU and yr board, or, yes, bad GPU.....but on BOTH LAPPYS?o_O What are the odds of that?

What happens when you hook external screens up to them?

I would think if same deal, then GPU loosing contact with the board.

Again, the odds of this happening with two lappys at the same time....very long odds. (Tho no way like winning Powerball.) Tho the slamming of the one might explain that one.... I think even that connection would have had to be already undermined....not sure.

When the not slammed one was running normally, did U monitor yr temps?

Thanks for the reply......

I tried hooking both up to an external screen. Both didn't output any video to the screen. They are both my sisters laptops so I couldnt monitor any temps. The 1st one was used sparringly and not for long durations. The second one is her kids and was used often with no problems until it was slammed shut.

Well, my lappys (only 2 so far), and those I have worked on belonging to others, when hooked up to an external screen, automatically switch to it, tho one can choose between them or do both.

SO, increasingly, this is lookin like two bad GPUs, or connection going between the GPUs and the respective boards....or a combo of those.

How sure are we that the first one was used sparingly and for short durations? Forget, using a lappy properly, with CARE and respect, trumps durations. We sure the kids din use the mom's lappy without her knowing it?

I asked about temps, cause overheating can compromise connections/solders, etc....heat is the ultimate enemy, esp of lappys. But, in this case, NOT YR RESPONSIBILITY to monitor.

For me, lappy repair takes too much time beyond replacing main parts, including KBs, etc., upgrading, etc. But you may be more skilled than I in this, only if yr up for it, I mean.

Both computers need repair. Either, if possible, fixing the connection between the GPUs and the board, or new GPUs. Nobody will know until the lappys are opened.

Afterthought: jus for the hell of it, try hooking external monitor up to the not slammed one again, and go to settings in display and see if you can change some setting to make the external the primary monitor. Longshot, but would not take long.

If the external screen remains dark....it will confirm what this seems to be.

Those are cracked screens. Yes you can hook it up via external monitor by the HDMI or VGA output. On startup it *should* output to all video outputs but if it doesn't you may need to press the monitor output button (usually F4 or FN+F4 on HPs).

Time to replace the LCD. You can do it yourself to save some money. HP provides service manuals off their support site. Buy the LCDs off ebay. Otherwise take it to a shop.

Tell me, where do you see cracks? Is it the respective patterns of the artifacting? My friend John dropped his Dell Inspiron and the screen cracked visibly, but the artifacting was minimal. Nothing like what the OP put up.

The screens are not cracked, they do appear that way in the pics though. I havnt busted open a laptop in over ten years.I just started taking apart the one and was reminded real quick how fun it is.

Im gonna try resetting the GPU on one of em. Half the time I seen the kid using the laptop she had it on the bed and im sure she used both of too at times.

It seems "quick and fun" are VERY subjective.:sneaky:

Yeah....THE KID. Important for humans to learn to respect stuff. Not just living beings.

My friend caved when her 6 year old demanded an iphone 5. When I was 6 I asked for a horse and a Corvette. So good I din get either.

Pls keep us updated.

Edit: if you can get an external monitor to function, it is possible The Kid damaged the screens. If not, I would personally still get what I got.

Lappys and Barbies not at all the same.

They certainly look that way from the pictures.

Well, troubleshooting more with the external screen will tell us if it's the screens/LCD panels or the GPU, yes? If the lappys can't communicate with the external screen, would that not indicate GPU issue or bad connection between GPU and board?

Father Torque: How are you connecting the external monitor? And, did you try again using the function key with the tiny monitor on it to send the signal? I thik the key is different with different lappys.

They sure do. OP are you sure those are not cracko_O

If the rear panels are cracked....and they may be, how come he can't get either lappy to communicate with the external screen?

Edit: worst case scenario.....might even be BOTH.

That's a broken screen. You just didn't break the outer glass. Hooking up an external monitor won't always immediately put a picture on the screen. Sometimes it will remain blank till you get to the Windows Desktop and sometimes you have to actually switch with ALT + F5 which differs with model.

Sigh. Given the consistent input here, with regret, I too now accept both screens are broken and both need replacing. (I did not want them to be broken.:|)

Still not sure re either GPU.....you gotta find the right FUNCTION key and see if you can get the lappys to communicate normally with them.
But while still long, odds of the kid breaking both screens is still shorter than both GPUs getting messed up.
