laptop wont work worth a darn! help!

MrDudeMan

Lifer
i have an old acer 486/75mhz laptop w/ 526mb hard drive, 20mb of ram (in one chip...somehow) and a floppy..no cd-rom

i can not get it to boot or do anything, it says its reading the floppy by telling me "starting MS-dos" or "starting windows 95"

and, keep in mind, it used to work like 3 days ago, but now it doesnt

any ideas??

I've heard that some laptops have ram on board and then with an expansion you could get 20Megs (maybe 16Meg stick and 4Megs onboard). Hmm strange, what did you do to it lately? Install anything new? Uninstall anything? Does it work from a boot disk?

ya, the 4mb onboard + 16mb expansion sounds like a winner. can someone send MrDudeMan a win95 boot disk so it doesn't have to mess with cdrom drivers and stuff? That would probably work because i'm betting it's getting confused trying to load all the mscdex stuff

david i already tried the bootdisk and i even deleted all the cd-rom stuff and edited the command.com to make it not try to find a cd-rom

but it just stalls.......

the bios comes up and everything, it searches on the floppy for some stuff to install, but bam it dies right there

and sometimes it even freezes before the device listing screen

a few days ago i pushed a button because i didnt know what it did, and it switched into suspend mode...i hit it again and it came back, but it hasnt been working right since then

i just thought of that

does anyone have a clue what is going on here?

First of all, I assume you are running on AC power? When you say the laptop dies, is it turning off or is it locking up? Try removing all power by removing the battery and AC power and letting the unit sit for awhile (30-60min). Try turning the laptop on without the battery in it. Reset the BIOS to defaults. Remove the 16MB memory module.
