I have a Dell Latitude D600, and I recently purchased a Enermax (EHD-350) External USB2.0 Hard Drive Enclosure.

My problem is when I start up the computer with the device hooked up through USB2.0, it hangs at the boot screen. But if I start my computer up without the device attached, it starts up fine, and then I can attach it and make it work. So how can I get my computer to start up with this device attached?

1. It's a USB 2.0 device.

2. Your Dell 600 may be USB 2.0 ??? Check that.

If the D600 is USB 2.0 it may be looking to boot from the external drive and hanging when it doesn't find any data to boot from.

So... What I suggest is that you enter your BIOS, look for your boot options and boot order- sometimes these are the same menu item, sometimes not.

Ensure that the D600 is either disabled from booting to a USB 2.0 device or that the USB 2.0 device is in an order following the HD>

Secondly,, some advice.... You should disable usb 2.0 boot devices anyway as you don't want some clown coming up to your machine and booting it to their USB memory key and formating your drive........or worse.

Okay I disabled USB storage devices from the BIOS and my computer still locks up at the boot screen.

Also the internal HDD was higher in the boot order than that USB storage device.

Any other suggestions?

Does the external device require separate power?

i have a usb 1.1 notebook drive in an enclosure and it sometimes makes the computer take FOREVER to boot, or, like your having an issue with, not boot at all, i just dont connect it when i boot, if i need it, i connect it after the PC is booted.
