laptop won't recognize wireless connection??

I've got a compaq 2500 CTO from a hot deal here a severl months ago.

a few months ago this problem began: I boot up and open internet explorer, but it doesn't recognize my wireless connection.

I then open up Network Stumbler9(WIFI locator) and BAM! I'm notified that my wireless connection is now available.

I've checked Device Manager to make sure the network adapter is connected and working properly - and it is.

any ideas? the Network Adapter is HP WLAN 54g W450.

thanks,
rob.

Sometimes changing the channel of your WIFI on your router may help. There may be interferences that can cause this.

Another thing, are you using windows xp's wireless mangement or the software that came with the wifi. For most wifi software, the windows wireless mangement has to be disabled and the wifi software has to be on for it to work properly or else there will be conflicts.

Finally, from my experience, if you are using windows xp's wireless management windows xp's sp2 does a much better job in case you haven't upgraded it yet.

LMK if this helps, if not I'll try to think of some more solutions.

Listen to aznbomber, those are some good suggestion. Windows XP wireless management is very erratic. SP2 is an improvement, but there are still bugs. I almost threw out a perectly good wireless router, until I realized it was Windows XP that was causing my dropped and disapearing connections.
