Tried it plugged into the AC outlet with the battery, w/o the battery, and with the battery only. Nothing, nada, the LEDs on the front didn't light up a single time. It's my friends laptop, she said it was working fine friday afternoon and when she got back from running it was dead. So my guess is that A) the CMOS battery died, if they even have one or B) the power supply has gone bad, or C) a power surge got it. Anyway, just wanted to know if you guys had any other ideas, tips on how to fix this, or if it needs repairs about how much they would run. btw- its a Toshiba laptop that was purchased a lil over a year ago.

Thanks,

J. :D

You didn't say whether you tried it with a fully charged battery. A common problem on laptops is for the power connector to break contact from the board inside. Try a charged battery to see if it lites up.

The only battery she has is the one that is in there, it should be charged but I have no way of knowing. :(

Put the tip of you tongue on the tip of the ac adapter. if you get a shock the adapter is ok (don't worry, it should only be about 18 volts max). If you dont get zapped the the adapter may be dead. You could also try jiggle the cable when you do this as the wire may be frayed and has no connectivity.

I want to trust you I really do, but I dunno. I'll see if I can get her to bring the lappy over tonight. If I die, it's your arse. ;)

Can anyone else back up this claim? I hate testing 9v batts, I wonder what this is gonna feel like...

If you can find another PS to test it's great. But if you can't you would have to use a multitester to find out ifit's working. If you don't know how to do this, bring it over to someone who knows how. If you know how but don't have the tools, you can just try hooking up a flashlight bulb with two wires and connected them to the PS connector. If the PS works, then most likely your laptop may need to be reset by removing the CPU and then re-inserting it again.

I am a failure...

I failed to follow the cardinal tech support rule: Check All the Cables

I made an asumption that she had checked all the cables before I got there...and of course I was wrong. She was packing it up to bring it over here and noticed that the AC adapter was both plugged into the wall and into the lappy BUT that the power cord had come out of the power brick. So the laptop is fine. I guess her cat started playing with it and pulled it apart. I now hold my head in shame and await the hail storm of fire and brimstone that shall befall me. :(

Let he or she who has never been fooled by cables and power switches and improper heatsink fittings strike the first blow lol
