Laptop won't boot, possible motherboard death, please advise.

I have a compaq laptop (Armada 1580 DMT)which has been acting funny for several months. First the keyboard behaved as though the Fn key was always on, unless I attached an external keyboard (then both keyboards would work fine). Then the floppy drive ceased to work. Then, one sad day, the machine finally just wouldn't boot up. There is a small noise, (a sign of life!) when I attempt to power up, but no stirring and whirring or lights or action. I have been told that the motherboard is fried. Then I was poking around on this site and I see a few people referring to 'changing a watch battery' inside the computer. Does this apply to laptops as well? (sorry if that's ignorant) and why would it help?

Any advice at all is most welcome. I would hate to have to trash this and buy a whole new laptop, which is what I have been told is my sad fate.

Thanks for your help,

Cheesie
