My Compaq Presario 1500 Laptop seems to have something wrong with it's power supply. When it is plugged in or running on batteries it won't boot. None of the lights turn on when I press the power switch and the screen stays black. It's completely dead.

I have no idea what to do - please help.

Has anything like drops, spills, etc happened recently? Has it been working perfectly just a while ago?

I have the Presario 1240 laptop, and I really dont like it (floppy is dead, CD-Rom cant read homemade CDs, etc). Anyway, this happened to me once. I called up compaq, and after a while, I finally got connected to a tech support rep. He said you have to do a "power cycle" or something. You have to take out the battery, plug in the power adapter, and it should boot up. Then, when it gets to windows, shut down, and insert the battery again. Dont turn it back on - just let the battery charge all the way (till the charge light goes out). Then turn it back on and play away! Now if this doesnt work...first, does the light on the little box (like it has a AC plug comming out one side and the little DC plug on the other), is the light lit up? If it isn't, then u might need a new power adapter. Otherwise, I dont know!

I may have bumped it too hard when I set it's carrying bag down. The carrying bag is padded. I got in the car and tossed the bag on the floor of the passenger seat. Maybe that was too hard I don't know. The screen is not cracked. It was working perfectly the other day. Is there some kind of reset switch or fuse to replace?

Oh so it worked until u did that? I would suggest taking a peek inside of it and see if anything was bumped loose. I took mine apart a couple times to change the floppy drive, etc. BTW mine is a P1 MMX 266MHz, 64MB ram, 4GB HDD. I dont even use it anymore lol.

Classic symptom of a CPU that needs reseating.

Oh my god I can't believe it works! I'm so happy. I did what you suggested, Speadfreak03 and it works like a champ now. Thank you so much. I am so relieved. All I had to do was take the battery out and plug it it. For a few days there I was thinking $1500.00 down the drain. Thanks again.
