Laptop won't auto-suspend

I bought my wife a Thinkpad R51 recently. She has a bad habit of leaving it on all night, so I set the power settings (XP Pro) to automatically go into suspend after an hour, and then to hibernate after 2 hours.

Unfortunately, it fails to do so. I can manually suspend it, and after it's in suspend an hour it will automatically hibernate, but it just won't auto-suspend. I've downloaded the latest PM drivers from IBM's site, but still no dice. I have a T42 and mine works (suspends) just fine.

Are there certain apps that will prevent suspend? Basically, she has iTunes, Firefox, Outlook, and Photoshop open at all times. I can't see FF or Photoshop coming into play, but I'm wondering about iTunes or Outlook -- neither of which I use on my thinkpad.

Any feedback is appreciated.

Try a dry run with no apps open. Odds are it could be Outlook checking for mail. But I would just try with nothing open first to see if that solves the problem.

Something is preventing the system from going "idle" it sounds like. You could leave a task manager window open, and have the columns sort that the CPU utilization is at the top
