Laptop woes, need opinions...

I need a laptop for general work, and I was just offered a great deal on an Apple PowerBook, which I hear are awesome laptops. Should I stick with the laptop I have, a Dell Inspiron 4150SE (1.7GHz P4/512MB DDR/40GB/CD-RW/14"XGA/WirelessNIC/16MB Radeon7500) or should I sell it on E*ay and get an Apple PowerBook (867MHz/15.2"/40GB/256MB SDRAM/CD-RW/32MB Radeon9000/GigEthernet/Firewire/sweet case) for $1650 (including the supposedly awesome AppleCare warranty).

I've heard that the Apple's get awesome battery life, have nice displays, have a great metallish case, and are generally fast enough for everyday use. Since OS X is *NIX based, you can run many apps on it, and the new OS 10.2 has the capability of running X applications, which are plentiful.

I'm interested to get some opinions on what I should do...

do you mind paying the extra cash?

the Dell is a nice notebook, so i think it's fine. if you really want the Powerbook and can afford it, get it. as far as normal computing goes, i don't think there's a compelling reason to switch. that's just my opinion.

(this coming from a notebook junkie who's bought and sold almost 10 laptops in the past few years 😛)

if i were u... i'll go for the powerbook. u've already stated some of the advantages/benefits w/ the pb and os x.

Sure, the Apple's got some nice features, but do you really have a reason to get rid of your existing laptop?

That's what I'm wondering... What do you plan on using your lappy for?

Peace out-

I do not plan on using the laptop for gaming. I will basically be:

- doing HW (word processor, etc)
- programming
- browsing the web
- watching movies
- listening to music

I can always log into my Windows/Linux boxen remotely if I need to do something platform-specific.

Why sell a laptop which is obviously superior to get a powerbook? Look at the specs on your laptop, its superior to the powerbook in many ways. You would be paying more to trade down. Not very wise in my opinion.

don't spend another $400-600 (not sure what Inspiron 4150's are going for on eBay) just to do that.

you can buy alot of toys for that money 🙂
