Please, someone make a great school laptop without the stupid glossy case, without the stupid glossy screen, and without the stupid 10-key that makes me shove my laptop 6 inches to the right so I can type, but then I have to look to the right to see my own computer screen.

PLEASE SOMEONE MAKE A LAPTOP THAT IS NOT STUPID!!!!!

MSI had one, but when they went from 5th gen to 6th gen, someone had the bright idea to ADD A FRICKEN 10-KEY!!! Will the stupidity never end?!?!?!

How narrow is your vision that you have to look right because of a 10 key?

Most business buyers prefer a 10 key. I hate not having one on my work laptop.

The amount of laptops used by business people vs. the amount of laptops with 10-key keyboards are seriously disproportionate.

What price range? What specs? What size?

Here are four widely available laptops:
Dell XPS 15 or 13
Asus 303 or 305

I have an Asus 305ca, pretty good laptop. Only 2 significant issues with it: one is the clickpad. Clickpads are a poor technology in my opinion, touchpad with 2 physical buttons is far superior. Second issue is a very slight coil whine. It is also only a Core M, though that is more than enough for what I use it for.

I want a big display (17" w/1920x1200), matte screen ideal, like I said no glossy anything... the MSI was nearly perfect except for the fact that they went with the 10-key, and there does not seem to be any non-10-key ones left. The rest of the stuff I care less about, although I'd like a quad-core for running statistical software, more RAM (i.e. 16-32GB)... I really don't care about battery life, I always plug in wherever I go anyway. Budget - I'd like to keep it under a kilobuck though I could pay more for something ideal....

Razer 17 inch is the only one that I know of that comes close, but that puts the touch pad where the numpad would be.

LOL... That's pretty funny actually. I refuse to buy a laptop without a numeric keypad. You'd with running statistical software you'd be dealing with numbers enough that dealing with top row number keys would be infuriating.

You want to run statistical software, but you don't want a dedicated numpad?

That seems... a bit less than optimal.

Will not be transcribing onto the laptop - all datasets will be uploaded.

Count me in as a guy frustrated with the lack of ~15" laptops with both a pointing stick (ie: that eraser-like thing) + no number pad. The number pad is just a bad fad. Seriously, who uses those things?

Anyone who does any kind of data entry at all? I don't have one on my home computer, but that's only to save desk space on my keyboard tray to allow for greater mouse movement, but on my work computer it sure is convenient. And I sure miss it at home come tax season. I really need to invest in a stand alone num-pad.

Maybe on a laptop I can see your point. I've never had to do a ton of data entry while I'm mobile, but then my laptops are only secondary devices for me.

There's a handful of 13" ones without NK, but with 17" good luck. Also I recently came across a 15" without a NK but I Forget what model it was, should've paid more attention.

I wish my Macbook had a keypad. I like not having to look at the keyboard. Just can't seem to get used to using the top number row without looking. But they do make wireless number pads just for that reason if it's needed.

I refuse to buy a laptop without a number pad. My passwords are almost entirely numbers, and it's 11tybillion times faster to type them in with the number pad vs the number row.

I don't understand why you have to "shove the laptop six inches to the right" to type, when the keypad is at most 3" wide. Just shove your hands 3inches left and quite whining?

Folks, I think this just illustrates that there are wildly varying opinions on the value of a number pad. Some absolutely need it, others can't stand it.

Me? Well, I'm a writer by trade, so I don't need it. Personally, part of why I use a MacBook Pro is that Apple doesn't try to cram in a number pad, offering more breathing room for the regular keys and letting me center on the display. It's just better for standard typing.
