Laptop without CD-ROM - software upgrade . . . hmm

XMan

Lifer
My girlfriend has an older laptop without a CD-ROM she'd like to put an Office program onto so she can give it to her brother for X-mas. I don't want to buy an external CD-ROM, plus I don't think the laptop has USB . . .

Can I install software over a network? Failing that, would copying the CD's over the network onto a folder in the hard drive work?

Also . . . what about freeware word processing programs? I could download one of them from the Internet possibly as well. Is Star Office any good?

Sure, try installing via network. Share another PC's optical drive with it.

Free word processing? How about OpenOffice?
