Laptop will not boot from Cd

So I have a Toshiba M200 laptop. It doesn't come with a floppy drive or a CD-Rom drive. So I also have a Dvd-rom drive that plugs in the USB. I put the restore CD in there and it won't boot. I checked the boot settings and Cd-rom is set to first. So then I thought the Cd could be broke. I tried my Windows Xp Cd and that did not work either. I am a bit out of ideas. I need to get into dos to run the restore cd. It will not run from Windows it says you need to restart and let the Cd stay in the drive until it asks to take it out. It restarts back to Windows but the recovery thing never pops up so I'm guessing it is trying to boot from the Cd but it will not boot from the cd. So how can I get into the a dos prompt?

Or should I format the hard drive from Windows and then when it tries to boot there won't be an OS so it will take me to a dos prompt?

Any ideas Laptop isn't mine so I'm not a pro with these kinda things. The laptop has Windows XP tablet pc edition.

If the laptop can boot from USB devices then you should change the order in BIOS so that USB hardware comes first in the boot order i.e. before your hard drive.

Updated to version 1.60, the newest one. Still won't boot from Cd. Btw that article said that in order for a specific Toshiba model to boot from usb you need to update the Bios not for all usb drives.

Also have a usb floppy drive tried booting from a startup disk, but since it doesn't know about the cd-rom I can not install. Maybe some usb drivers for dos for a Sony Drx-700ul dvd-rw drive.

Any more help?

If you can boot from a floppy disk then you can load USB drivers and detect the CD-Rom from the floppy. If you google for it you should find out how to do this. I can't remember off the top of my head but I'll try and look for you. If I find it I'll update this post.

OK. So I finally got it to work. I didn't use the boot Cd or floppy really, well kind of. I booted off a LAN. The laptop doesn't support booting from all CD-roms, so that is why it would not boot off of mine I guess.

I wish I would known this was an option for you. I currently configure all of my PCs over the LAN using PXE and a RIS server. I also use ghost in some cases. Makes life so much easier...
